Dear chickens...have you heard of chicken SOUP?

-32 degrees actual temperature is not too cold - see pictures

With the last cold snap, a lot of people posted "WHAT IS TOO COLD. A couple of points, cause we all tend to think of our own set up when we consider this. SD is pretty arid I have a shed type coop I have created out door in the run wind breaks that act as sun porches with some old shower doors...

Cold here, and something I just observed.

We are Negative 15, and the sun is shining. Down taking care of my girls and out of the wind, in the sun, kind of pleasant, so a pause a bit to watch them. There is a young pullet, standing on one leg, the other tucked up under her, and she stands like this for quite a while, and it looks like...

Size of the egg = better chicks?

So I have a 2 year old BA, coming into lay now and is producing giant eggs. They are very good eggs with thick whites, and large yolks. I also have first year layers, that are producing eggs too, but much smaller (bigger than a pullet egg) Is size of the egg important when you go to hatch?

I gave a rooster away and it makes a difference.

Last July, I got two pretty boys to add to my rebuilding flock. They got along, I really never noticed much tension, the old girls did some schooling, they often roosted next to each other at night. I did think it might get rough in the spring when hormone start to rise. I have a small flock...

    A pullet CAME THROUGH.

Been watching for weeks. Have 12 birds in the coop and 4 out of 5 of the layers are molting. One lone layer... and 2 pullets. One started laying today! hurray! So hoping the other one will too. The other 4 are chicks hatched in August. Don't expect anything from them till January? Mrs K

    And molting begins

I thought there would be a dead bird, near that pile of feathers! She is nearly naked, patches falling off. Well when they molt hard, they tend to recover fast! Mrs K

Now is the time, drastically reduce your feed bill, drastically increase the harmony of the flock

Now is the time, to thin your flock. Thing is you can cheat with the long days of summer. Often times, your new birds are chicks, smaller birds, more can fit in an area. But soon we are entering in the Northern hemisphere the long nights of winter. Smaller flocks fit in coops better, you really...

2-3 week chicks - in the flock without a broody hen

Accidentally in a ranch store - chicks...some how I got 4. Just beginning to get wing feathers when I picked them up on Thursday. Today, I see the tail feathers coming in. It is August but we have been cool, high 50's at night, high 70's at day. I came home, put them in a bedded dog crate with...

    Sleeping birds 7:23 am

Goodness, I am up before the chickens. I know many of you are suffering terrible heat, but South Dakota has had a pretty cool summer. Yes it is cloudy this morning and raining a little, but I went down to check on some chicks, and everyone is still roosted up! We are not suppose to be out of...

    Observations on two roosters

Often times people ask about how do you choose the right rooster out of a group, so I thought I would write down some observations. I added two juvenile cockerels. They were crowing and in a flock mate flock, they thought they were hot stuff. I brought them home and Mrs. Feathers taught them...

Mrs. Feathers meets the new cockerels

Year two in a rebuild, and I am back to adding some cockerels (about 2 months old) after Snowman did not turn out. I got two very pretty pieces of eye candy. Turned them in with the layers. And one of them was on the strut...strutted by Mrs. Feather, who promptly whipped his butt, I am sure...

NOW is the time - 6 hens 7 eggs

Next December I will expect to have 2-3 eggs per day. You should expect about 1/2 the summer production, unless you have just high producing hens, and even they will cut back. And for the most part, I have young hens. For those of you with older girls, you can expect considerably less than that...

Do cross beaks show up later?

I bought three chicks for a broody hen. I picked the ones I wanted out of a bin, and I am sure that I looked closely at them. They are several weeks old now, close to 6 weeks. Today, I see what I think is a stick out of the side of her mouth, but now I think is a cross beak. I didn't catch her...

Bull snake - how many eggs?

We have been very busy, with many people visiting, and of course that is when I had a production drop. Must be a hidden nest, but I finally had a day to really look and nada. Once in a while I would find a random egg out in the run, just laying on the ground. Right now, I should have 5 active...

The advantages of an experienced broody hen

Wednesday night, I slipped three hatchery chicks under Mrs. Feather in the dark. The next morning, I went and pulled her out of the nest, and put the chicks on the ground near her. The layers were outside, eating. I went to work. Thursday night when I went down, she was out in the run, under a...

Recently there have been several posts on reforming your rooster

So, I thought maybe I was a bit hasty and I waited. To I removed him from the flock...and already I like my flock better. Each of us has to solve this on their own, and on their own time frame... but I never liked this rooster, from the day I picked him up. I thought at the time it was because...

Does a white dot on the head always mean a rooster chick?

I got a mix of chicks. A couple have a white dot, but they are are different breeds. So are they for sure rooster chicks? Mrs K

Train your chicks to a dog crate.

I worry about a heat lamp all night and a fire. So when I have chicks, I have a heat lamp covering a small area in the brooder where chicks can warm up if needed. At night, I turn the heat lamp off, and inside a bedded dog crate, I have a wooly mamma - just thick wool insulation on the inside of...

    New chicks - the excitement

The hobby never grows old for me. New chicks in the mail. A grab bag of chicks divided among 3 friends, and now the wonder, which ones did I get. Definitely a couple of the lavender and chocolate orpington. and surely maybe 3 javas? Cream leg bars are in the mix - they will be cute with their...
