    Heat Lamps

I use a standard poultry heat lamp. I also use a Heat Mat Thermostat Controller to regulate the temperature. I mount the light securely and up high enough that it is on for long durations. The bulbs don't last long if they are shut off and on often.

    Chick ID

Thanks, ill check its leg color. I think it could be a cinnamon queen cockeral - I found one photo online and they are a similar color to buff chicks

    Chick ID

I have three chicks that hatched recently. They are supposed to be buff orpingtons and cinnamon queen (silver laced Wyandotte hen and new Hampshire red rooster). This is my first time breeding and incubating. In my photo, I am guessing the middle one is a buff orp and the other two are...

Growing black oil sunflower from feed seed

A friend if mine did and said it worked fine. I did not see the results as it was on a hunting property not near me. I also just priced 50 lb bag of sunflower seed from my local Growmark and it was $18 a bag.

    Guinea hen broody second time

I left the straw bales around the nest and we noticed one morning the male was on the nest with the hen. Looking closer we could see egg shells. It was warm and dry so we left them alone for a day but with heavy rain forecast for the next night I then moved parents an 13 keets to brooding...

    Automatic freeze proof watering?

Past few years I used buckets with nipples in the bottom and a bucket heater from local farm supply store. I had the nipples freeze up a few times but not for long. This year I took a piece of 1.5" pvc, drilled nipples into it, put heat tape cord down both sides of the pipe, wrapped in foam...

    Selling chickens or butchering

I am in the same position. I'm trying to sell some but would rather butcher them. We have butchered an old roosters on our own but it takes time we don't have right now. We have no butcher shop that will butcher chickens anywhere nearby. I am checking with ethnic groceries nearby to see if I...

    Breeding flock management

I have had chickens a few years but this is the first time I am trying breeding. Currently, I am keeping one rooster with 5+ hens and keeping the breeds separate. They take turns free ranging on different days. Is it possible to keep all hens together and only put them in with the chosen...

    Guinea hen broody second time

I've had guineas a few years and they always nested and went broody late in the summer (August). I usually loose a lot to hawks, etc and have only ever had one hen around to lay eggs. This year, the only hen left, i think a french guinea, went broody in May and hatched five keets. They were...

Okay, I am going to open top of run they are in to let out parents, of course the hen will not go far. For the first few days after born I keep them in pen with hardware cloth covering bottom half of front opening and the parents flew (jumped) in and out. Once the keets were big enough to not...
