Hi Renee. There is no conspiracy here. The purpose behind patchtotable.com is to share what I learn with others - on my journey to find solutions for a more healthy, sustainable and self sufficient food system. In the same way that you join as a member to contribute to the backyardchickens forum...
Hi Hollymamma - what was the problem you had accessing the instructions? I am in the process of switching hosting providers so there may be some glitches in the next few days.
My thoughts are - provide a commercial grain feed as the base and then provide as much foraged food and kitchen scraps as possible (leaves, vegetables, fruit, insects and animal protein). Chickens can balance their own diet - so will forage what they can get and top up on the grain feed. You can...
Its an interesting point. My take is that jungle fowl evolved to blend into their natural environment in the forest - which provides some protection but of course would not be fail safe. A dark domesticated chicken on an open grass paddock will get little (if any) benefit from its colour in that...
Agree with iluvsedward - dark chickens blend in more than white so would be less chance of being spotted. But certainly not fail safe.
My advice for increasing a chickens natural defence from predators:
darker colours help chickens blend into their environment compared to white colours which...
Really good advice from everyone.

The article is called "Primal Chickens - 6 chicken keeping secrets from the evolution of chickens." This challenges some of the conventions (including diet), by studying the evolution of chickens...
When I got started with backyard chickens, I was excited by the idea of fresh eggs every day and I had this romantic idea of chickens pecking around contently in my garden. But the reality was very different. They trashed more veggie gardens than I would like to remember, turned the chicken run...
I have a feeling Eugene could turn out to be Negan's No1 side kick. He originally did lead the crew on a fake mission just to save his own neck. Now I can see him doing whats necessary to keep comfortable. He is certainly turning out to be a real interesting character.
A lot of the hassles of chicken keeping are caused by water and the type of waterer equipment you use.
Dirty water that needs changing daily, muddy pits, smelly coops and rat infestations. These problems can turn backyard chickens into a huge pain in the ***!
But I really don’t think it needs...
it looks great - its got a bit of a barn look to it.
I like that the beer features in the photos.
Chickens are really creatures of habit - they don't like change at all.
There is a cap you can put on at night - if that rats are agile enough to get in.
Initially I thought the shape would make it hard for rats to get in - but I found that rats can be pretty persistent (and agile) - so I added the cap to stop this.
It also stops spillage - so that it doesn't...
