It is laughable - Red(my 4yo RIR) has been limping - when I first checked about 2 mos ago no obvious injury or problem - well... I checked about 10 days ago - limping has persisted - and found the dreaded black scab - it is on one of her toes - not on the fleshy pad of her foot - so I soaked...
I am guessing this is just a 'chicken story' - I didn.t feel well this AM - let the flock out (1 roo and his 7 girls) at about 8 and went back in the house after scattering scratch and topping off water - just got up from an afternoon nap and decided to take out a handful of mealworms for treat...
Just thought I'd update in case anyone else had this challenge - I fixed quiet corner in coop for hen and Onesie - they pass thru main part of roost with everyone else into a sort of playpen area outside in run - the rest of flock passes thru playpen(jumps over door barrier which i will raise...
Thanks so much ChicksAreSweet(they certainly are!) - I am glad to know Mom will hang in there! Right now she is being great - I can see her showing chik how to scratch and she is VERY protective. I am fixing quiet area to try the crate technique. I chuckle as I am working and keep praying the...
hi! all - had 'accidental' sneaky broody which would ordinarily be OK but then only one hatch from 7 eggs on the 6/3(couldn't there have been 2?) - right now I have hen and chick segregated in a refrigerator box inside coop with food, water, indirect fan(is 85-90 here in SC), intermittant light...
I agree...and I will tell you what I have told pregnant women about labor(am old retired midwife0) - you WILL know! don't laugh - I really know you will - make sure she has some privacy and water to drink. If she is outside she will hide...maybe bring her in so you can observe. Go with her...
hi! I am a retired midwife and I would have told any of my Moms to eat their eggs from their own chickens if they had them! Congrats and I know you will be a great Mom - am delighted to hear you have chosen to see a midwife.
I think you will be very happy to start a small flock - and you and the children will be very entertained and learn lots! this site is definitely the place to start your research and is my experience everyone will be helpful with your questions when you have them! Have Fun!
hi! like it - I am NOT a chicken expert but you will find lots of good info at this site, Chicken 101 was so helpful to me. All the various hens I have had have laid sometime after they were 5 months old - but a few not until the were 8 months old because they molted at 6 months and don't...
hi! Curtis, Welcome! - there is a lot of good info on this site about laying behaviors - ie: how old are the hens?; are they molting?; are they just still adjusting to move/new feed? - check 'Chickens 101'. I am not sure what you mean by rooster roosting? he may just be adjusting too. and yes...
my Mama hen is ferocious protecting her chicks from the other flock members; the other flock members do not seem phased by the chicks at all - the only reason I have to separate them is that the babies seem to find ALL the little escape holes I thought I had closed! so I have a 'baby-proof' area...
how much more fun it has been to watch new hatchlings developing outside in the coop! I have a really secure coop and run area for a "Mom" and her 9 mixed chicks - really wasn't expecting the chicks since three other broods never hatched(and believe me I gave them plenty of time)(proven wrong...
I have read the info on coop maintenance/floor material(s)here and do not find an answer - recently came across mention elsewhere that cedar shavings are toxic to chickens...my flock seems to be fine with its use and it keeps down odors and bugs...but should I switch to something else? Do not...
:)How egg-citing! I have two hens on small clutches; one due for hatching three eggs tomorrow and the other is a silly hen who has never met a rooster! I slipped three probably fertile eggs under her and am hopeful! they have been very diligent setters. I would be delighted with one or two...
My rooster - Louie(was supposed to be 'Lois') - was sitting on an egg this AM! He was clucking a lot to the hen whose egg it was...she was clucking back and observing from the coop door...was very amusing! I have seen him make nests for the ladies in the past...a real gentleman!
