Leaving home for 36 hours. What should I do with my chicks?

I have trained even young chicks to drink from a rabbit or guinea pig water bottle! Water can't get dirty, can't get knocked over, and it lasts a long time.

I know it's early but....Who's ready for 2024 Baby Chicks!

Oh, this is worrying! It's so important to check the calendar and especially stay away from weekends. I buy from Meyer and all their chicks hatch on a Monday and they ship right away so they arrive in a day or two, staying away from weekends. I hope and pray they will be OK! Maybe they will come...

I know it's early but....Who's ready for 2024 Baby Chicks!

I placed my order as well because I was afraid they would be sold out if I waited any longer. I ordered Olive and Easter Egger chicks and hatching eggs for a project with my students. We can't wait!!

I know it's early but....Who's ready for 2024 Baby Chicks!

You will love Speckled Sussex! My original flock and they are calm and friendly. I had to get different breeds for my next generation because the SS were sold out!

    Cochin thread!

YAAAAY for Cochins, my FAVORITE! I have a bantam Black Cochin named Tappy (her twin Tippy died, she had white wing tips and my 7 yo granddaughter named them) and JUST got 6 Mottled Cochin bantam chicks who are SOOO adorable! We had a bantam Mottled who died a few months ago and we miss her...

Talk me off the Ledge... $2000 for a chicken coop!

I'd be concerned about using metal - that will turn into an oven on a hot day unless they have installed some pretty heavy-duty ventilation system. Does it have windows at least?

Talk me off the Ledge... $2000 for a chicken coop!

I paid over $3K for the materials to build a 10 x 16 coop (thankfully, last fall, and I stored it away for spring) but it will be as sound as a house. This is just for lumber, hardware, and metal roof. I went to my favorite home improvement store which had a promotion that if you spent more than...

    Frustrated with Buggy Feed

How do you know that date is even this year? It could be years old, which makes sense since feed should not get buggy for a long time.

    4 legged chick Clover

Yup! People do it with skin tags (don't ask me how I know...) :D It stings for awhile, then stops. Works like a charm!

    4 legged chick Clover

OP mentioned that the extra legs are not attached to the chick's skeleton. There are bones in the extra legs but the legs are only attached by skin.

    Looking for beautiful Breeds

I am partial to Cochins, I have bantams and they're like little old ladies, lol. SO fluffy!! My mottled cochin is my favorite. Crosses can produce some stunning birds - here is a bantam Silver-Laced Wyandotte x Speckled Sussex and a Mille Fleur x Speckled Sussex.

    Trashy dogs!

I WOULD bear him ill will - it's HIS fault that the dogs are loose and killing birds, not the dogs' fault! They are just doing what comes naturally. I would leave the carcasses on his front step.

    Trashy dogs!

In NH, we can shoot to kill any animal that is harassing livestock. I used to have your problem at a home I owned years ago (no roaming dogs in my current area but I have a good, fenced-in yard) and politely informed all the neighbors via a note in their newspaper boxes about the law. No more...

    Opinions on rooster agression?

That IS tough. Can you have geese? They are very protective and I believe will go after a dog. What are the laws in your state about livestock? In NH, we can shoot to kill any animal that is even harassing our livestock, never mind killing them. If you have the same law, a little education can...

    Opinions on rooster agression?

I wonder, as I only get gentle breeds, if breed has any bearing on how aggressive a roo is. My Mom had RIR and White Leghorns over the years and the WL had the worst roos, very aggressive. I still can see the scars on my shins where I was gored. I have had a bantam roo in the past, I think he...

    Opinions on rooster agression?

I read about this trick and have tried it and it works. If you have a roo that you really want to keep (they DO have a legitimate place in a flock and can be very valuable) but they are aggressive to you or other humans, you take said roo and swaddle him and carry him around as long as you can...

    Chickens don’t like Carhartt

This reminds me of my Mom's years with hens - she always got the 25-pack from Sears Roebuck every two years and there was always a roo or two in there (we'd eat the extras) and all she had to do to keep the roo in line was to carry a child's hoe. Never had to use it, but they never went near her...
