I had a similar situation with quail recently. Here’s what I did. I used a Qtip with a little mineral oil to moisten the membrane. I had used coconut oil previously on assisting a chick and the other chicks kept pecking at the coconut oil areas on his body. Mineral oil isn’t actually greasy so...
What a fantastic project! I like that flooring, I never knew you could get it 12’ wide and cut to length, that’s great.
Since you’re up in a colder climate ventilation is just as important a factor as protection from weather. May I suggest you and your dad look at the Woods style coops? It’s...
Absolutely! Theres even a gal on Etsy that sells a 3D printed quail tray
.
It comes in 3 pieces with instructions and clips to hold while glue dries. I didn’t glue, just used the clips.
I decided to give it another go.
I realized the bad luck trifecta of shipped eggs/damaged air cells, the 7 day power outage and my own inexperience/missteps PROBABLY wouldn’t repeat itself, but I waited to share the progress JUST in case of another crushing failure. So. I have babies hatching...
First 3.5 weeks..... I had to put a screen cover on it for the last week or so....9 Australorp Roos and 8 American Bresse. The bedding is Hemp.
As of Saturday 3/13/2021
I use 2x2’s wrapped tightly with bicycle inner tubes.
I found this study and the accompanying link about this years ago and designed it into my system from the start. I just didn’t need it until now, so it’s only been up since Monday. It also took me several years of occasional searching and...
I just bought a green one from her, there were only 1-2 available per color (4). maybe she is keeping the inventory low until she’s got more feedback. I got green because I wanted to be able to distinguish it from the one I got off eBay.
Thank you. Yes it was a relief to get power back. We had just gone to town to get gas/perishable food/propane/water.....it came on a couple hours later. Murphy’s law of course.
Well I have bad news and good news. None of the eggs hatched. We had snow then freezing rain here which left us without power for a week, starting on day 15. And temperatures dropped into the 20-30’s each night.
We alternately ran a generator and/or the inverter in our semi truck with...
So I did a quick search and found this where someone had a similar issue. Besides the antibacterial ointment it said you can also use coconut oil.

good luck!
I’m not sure, but over on this thread I’ll post in a minute, several people put medicated ointment (without pain reliever!) on the membrane to keep it alive.
Thank you for the heads up on the gunk collector (structural ) baffles, I think I will do exactly what you proposed with paper towels or maybe something like paper medical tape. I didn’t notice any major junk there from my quail hatch, but maybe they weren’t as messy.
Hows the chick?
