I brought her inside and administered VetRX. Not sure what else to do. She’s 9 months old. Everyone else is fine.

    Young cockerel

He may be showing he's ready to be the man of the flock. No more hanging out with Mama.

One year old strange egg behavior

A young hen is layer extremely large eggs which seem to have very watery whites. Any idea why this may be? She is also dropping them all over and not necessarily laying in the nest box.

Safe to keep baby chicks in flock?

Of course they need their mama! She will protect and reach them. Ours stay in their own crate within the coop run which we close at night so the chicks don’t get lost or stuck somewhere. In the morning everyone is let out to free range. Mamas decide when the chicks are ready to go out and...

Safe to keep baby chicks in flock?

That has never happened to us in 9 years of chicken keeping.

Do you free range your chickens?

My 18 free range on half an acre. I have no problem with the neighbor‘s cats, but we have lost some to mink and hawks. We make sure they are in well before dusk, and have strung up lines to deter flying predators. The chickens love having the run of the place, but all the negative comments...

    Heat wave! Help!

I freeze 2 liter pop bottles full of water and put them in the coop at night. I call them chicken air conditioners.

I have some hens over 6 years old, still laying. A couple who are 8 are retired, but we still love them. Thanks for the article.

    Rooster behavior

They are there to protect their hens. My rooster is very gentle unless I am carrying a hen for some reason or other. Then he will run at me. So now I am careful not to look like I’m hurting his girls and we get along fine. He has never come close to any kids.

    Well, he's toast now

There are gentle ones out there and people are all too willing to give them away. I have an extra right now. Anyone on Vancouver Island want a gentle, quiet, part Silkie rooster?
