    Sand in the run?

Construction (concrete) sand definately - has lots of little rocks and is a coarser sand as well. Great drainage and does not run off as much as I think play sand would. I have the construction sand 4-6" deep in my run over drain rock, stays nice and dry (covered run in the PNW), they like to...

would a door like this work for the run?

Instead of having a 4ft wide door, how about 2 - 2ft wide doors? Less weight on the hinges, you can secure the left door on the inside with barrel locks, open the right door from the outside which can be secured to the left with a pad lock. Also does not need as much room to swing open. Just...

    Coop build one year later...

I used poulty staples to hold the hardwire cloth in, they are about 3/4" long. As I add finishing details I am going to screw (with an offset pattern) 2x4's on the overlaps of the wire so My wife has something more to hang planters on so this should just add more security to the hardwire cloth...

    Coop build one year later...

My wife and I absolutely fell in love with your coop and did our basic design around what you had created! Still have things to do (the devil is in the details!), nest boxes, pop door and such - but the girls love it! I also thank-you for giving me some pointers during my design phase...

Aha! Just found out poultry regulations for Vancouver, WA

In the city limits you do not need a building permit for a "garden shed" that is under 120 sq ft. You do however need a land use permit (http://www.cityofvancouver.us/upload/contents/439/Land_Use_EDIT.pdf)with a scaled drawing of all buildings on your property (funny thing is you also are...

    Sand for the run?

I went with sand as well over a drainage rock base because of clay soil drainage issues. I used a concrete/construction sand because it was only 23$ a yard and ranged from fine sand to small pebbles. The girls have been on it just over a week and are taking dust baths, scratching around in it...

Sand or crushed limestone for run

I used concrete sand - has small pebbles/rocks in it. Drains quickly and the chicks like to pick at it. edited to change from construction to concrete sand.

    What kind of wood?

Is your coop floor at ground level or raised up a foot or so? Like River Lizard said "How long do you want the coop to last?" I think I would try and spend a little more now for good plywood rather than have to redo later. Just my .02$

    Chicken Coop construction UPDATED

Looks great - I really like the split roof that you ended up having to go with. I had thought about using metal roof for my coop as well but found a mom&pop lumber store that dealt in seconds. Got a square of architectural shingles for 35$ so thats the way I went!

    Chickens won't use ladder

The first day that I let them out in the run I had to take them out of their coop that they had been in for the last 5 days. To help them with the ramp I just sprinkled scratch at the bottom and then all the way up the ramp. They figured the ramp out pretty quick and were all in bed that first...

    Thoughts on this coop

I think it looks great - saves you time and for the price possibly even money! Good luck and have fun.

    I got my run on!!!

    Love the door! Great job!

    Coop flooring

I would definately put down pine shavings, pellitized horse bedding or some other type of litter. Cleaning (scraping and scraping) chicken poo off of a cement floor does not sound like fun!

    Fence staples and hardware cloth

Alright, I am starting to put up my hardware cloth in my run and found these "poultry staples" or "fence staples" that I have put up a couple of pieces with. Seems like they hold the wire to the 2x4 pretty strongly. My question is has anybody else used these (from Home Depot) or are you all...

    no fruits for egg layers?

I'm wondering if the hens are not supposed to eat citrus because of its possible effects on calcium needed for egg shells?

Started my coop!! The sun is out...New pics-update

Have been busy this weekend - got the roof put on and shingled, the coop painted inside and out, the vinyl in for the floor, teh chicks moved in and a window hung! This next week I will hang the other window and hopefully finish the run. Really just needed to get the chicks moved in as they...

Painting the inside of the coop...

I'm kind of in the same boat. Plan on moving chicks into the coop by the weekend but know that I will still have lots to do cosmetically - inlcuding painting the interior. The exterior paint I am using inside says it dries in 2 hours at 77deg weather - so when its hot - I'll paint early to let...
