Not egg bound if you don't feel an egg inside? What else then?

Thank you so much for responding. I looked up vent gleet. She has no discharge and there is no smell. Is there a protocol for dealing with a shells egg?

Egg bound or something else? Urgent

How do you euthanize? It is so sad to watch a hen slowly die. I would gladly put her out of her misery if I could once I know there's no hope.

Not egg bound if you don't feel an egg inside? What else then?

Our Easter Egger, Peggy, is not looking good. She's self-isolating from the flock, tail down instead of up, feathers looking kind of ragged. We just returned from a trip so I don't know the last time she laid but she for sure hasn't in the past two days. My house sitter says she hadn't seen a...

    Beans

Aah okay thanks for the reply. Beans go in the trash.

    Beans

Resurrecting this thread to re-pose the question. Anyone else feed refried beans to their hens? I never eat them when we bring home Mexican and it just occurred to me that beans are pure protein and might be good for the hens, along with the little tortilla “bowl” they are served in. Safe?

    Broody fail :-(

Ahh thank you both. So helpful to hear others’ experiences!

    Broody fail :-(

We've had several successful broody adoptions through the years. This is our first fail. We did everything the same as in the past so I am tempted to blame the hen. Our Salmon Faverolle went broody last year and I decided not to give her chicks because she was so skittish and unstable. In the...

Sudden death - does anyone know what this might be?

Thank you @Eggcessive . We simply buried her. At the moment, at least, the rest of the flock appear to be fine. Her obit here: https://polloplayer.wordpress.com/2021/07/03/in-memory-of-june/

Sudden death - does anyone know what this might be?

Noticed a few days ago that our four-year-old Ameraucana seemed a bit listless, possibly molting - awfully early in the summer for that, I thought. Then yesterday I saw that she had runny poop - white and green. I cleaned her up and started researching. Thought maybe vent gleet? Was going to...

Sick hen - now maggots in her poop! Anything that can be done?

Thank you so much @FluffyBottomBantams - do you mean I should check for the ascites or for flystrike? It’s strange because we have almost no flies where we live -always a breeze off the ocean and rarely very warm. I haven’t even noticed any flies around in the past few weeks. Clearly the wound...

Sick hen - now maggots in her poop! Anything that can be done?

I gave her a saltwater bath after seeing it as a treatment on a thread here. Didn’t see any more maggots after that. Syringed her with sugar water all through the eveni. Got into the vet first thing this morning. Vet said her abdomen was so filled with fluid from either cancer or internal...

    Flystrike

Where did you find the directive for a 15-minute saline bath? Does it have to be for that long?

Sick hen - now maggots in her poop! Anything that can be done?

I rinsed her off, so much poop on her bottom. She has had a poopy back end for some time, actually. When I put her back in the coop one of the maggots (?) fell from her. Attached a photo - hard to see since it's about the same color as the pine shavings.. It's sort of at left center. Is there...

Sick hen - now maggots in her poop! Anything that can be done?

We have a RIR that I believe is near death. She has been failing for some time, stopped eating some days ago. I just went into the coop to clean up around her and found what I think are maggots in her poop! Small, white, roundish. I have never seen anything like this with any of my other hens...

This is new to me - "auntie" hen wants to help mother the chicks.

I have an EE who has been a very undistinguished member of the flock. So much so, in fact, that when she went broody in January (January????) I said nope nope nope. Not only was it an off time of year, but this hen tends to be bullied and I didn't think she could defend chicks against our mean...

    Another successful broody graft.

I have an Australorp who has never given even a passing thought to going broody. You must have some magic going on in your flock! But one of my EE’s went broody in January and I was like, um, are you sure? She’s at the bottom of the pecking order so I didn’t trust her to be able to defend...

@DobieLover so sweet! I didn't know Barred Rocks went broody!

    Another successful broody graft.

Just in case anyone needs encouragement to try it - we just gave our Bella two baby chicks (which we acquired thanks to some help from @SurferchickinSB !) and it has gone so well, again. Buff Orpingtons make spectacular broody moms, although so did my little Mille Fleur d'Uccle. Mostly, it is...

How nutritious is chicken poop for my dog?

Has anyone tried the cayenne shaker on chicken poop to discourage their dog from eating it? My new puppy is obsessed with eating chicken poop. :(
