    Crop Issues

My 2 year old Australorp hen has developed an issue with her crop. It is extremely large, has sagged and flops side to side when she moves and she has lost the feathers from her chest. It does not fill up during the day and turn firm so she can digest her food at night. It just stays floppy...

Lime Green Egg White in Duck Egg

Has anyone ever come across a lime green egg white in a duck egg? One of my duck egg customers came across this & asked me about it. In the 6 years I have been raising ducks this is the only time I have come across this so I was not able to answer her. Concerned the egg is not safe to eat with...

    Dementia in Chickens

Has anyone every heard of a chicken getting dementia? I have an 8 1/2 year old hen who gets lost every time she is outside. She wanders around in her own la la land world & every night I have to put her in her coop because she forgot to put herself to bed. Other than this she seems to be...

    Trouble with Silver Laced Wyandottes

I have had five Silver Laced Wyandotte hens. Every single one wound up with a prolapsed vent and Ilost each one of them. None of my other hens have had this problem and I have 56 chickens of many different breeds including Golden Laced Wyandottes and Columbian Wyandottes. Does anyone know if...

    Bluing for Algae Reduction

Has anyone ever heard of using bluing for reducing algae in chicken waterers? I just read in a garden book that bluing will not hurt any living creature & that it is great for reducing algae in bird baths. Don't want to use it on my feathered friends until I am sure it won't harm them in any way.

    Chickens and Mud

We have had so much snow and rain this winter that my chicken yard and pasture is flooded with many areas of 3 inch deep mud when the water recedes. I have heard this is not safe for chickens and can breed disease. Unfortunately, there is nothing I can do about the problem. I laid pallets down...

    Worming Question

I need to worm my chickens & I am wondering if it is safe to worm my ducks the same as I do the chickens. I plan to use either Wazine or Ivermectin. My ducks & chickens hang out together & share the same water containers.

    Crossed Beak Chick

Have a brand new chick (hatched this morning) that has a crossed beak. Is there anything that can be done or should I just end any suffering that may occur from this. I am afraid this same chick may have leg issues as well. May wait a couple hours to see since it is so new.

    Another Sick Chicken

Help! One of my Brahma hens is sick. Symptoms are swollen face, watery eyes with bubbles in the inside corners of the eyes, lethargy and she is not eating well. Any clues as to what it might be & how to treat it? Not sure I did the right thing but I started her on Sulmet yesterday when I...

    Dying Hens

I have lost 4 hens since last October. They range from 9 months to 3 years of age. I suspect they may have become egg bound but I am not sure. They have all had a pasty butt, lethargic, weight loss & an enlarged abdomen. I cut one of the dead hens open & found what looked like a grapefruit...

    First Time Duck Owner

I recently acquired 7 ducks. They are Indian Runners (2 males & 1 female) & Khaki Campbells (1 male, 3 females). What is the male to female ratio? There is a lot of fighting amongst the males for the females. I'm afraid the males may drown one of the females as they fight over her in the...

    Coccidiosis Again? Dosage for Corid

I believe my chickens have a mild case of coccidiosis again (UGH!) and I can't remember the dosage for Corid (Amprolium) to use on chickens. Can any one help with that. Also is there some way I can sterilize the ground so I will stop having this issue? This is the 3rd time in the past year...

    Soft Shelled Eggs

Three of my 30 hens have been laying soft shelled eggs for a several months now. One is a golden Sexlink (2 years old) another is an Ameraucana (1 year old) and I don't know who the third one is. The Sexlink started laying the soft shelled eggs after molting last fall and the other two started...

    Chickens not laying

I have around 18 hens that are 18 months or older. Earlier this summer I was given 4 chickens that had stopped laying for unknown reasons. Three of them (3 years old) were put in the stewpot after a couple weeks but the 4th one I promised to let her live out her days. Now my hens have almost...

    Prolapsed Vent

I have an 18 month old Silver Laced Wyandotte hen with a prolapsed vent. This may not be her first time. I had issues with this before with one of my SLWyandottes but I am not sure this is the same one or not. I have her secluded in a dog crate with a tarp over it to keep her in the dark to...

    Sickly Rhode Island Red

I have an 18 month old RIR that is not feeling well. It started a couple days ago. She walks like she is weak and in pain and lays around most of the time. Her poop is semi-solid with liquid. She will not eat or drink unless I force the issue. I have just finished a course of sulfamethazine...

    Egg Laying Issues

I have an 18 month old Silver Laced Wyandotte who, when she lays an egg, her internal vent area (intestine?) protrudes about an inch & stays out 5-10 minutes after the egg is laid. Is this normal? Is this a heath issue I should be concerned about? If so, what can be done about it? I have only...

    Newbie to BYC

Hi. I am Carrierose. I have only had chickens for about 11 months. My husband & I really enjoyed watching our neighbor's chickens and their crazy antics and wanted some of our own. Our neighbor gave us seven of her hens and one rooster. I wanted more so I purchased a few chicks here and a...
