Thanks for replying to my question. That could be the problem. This is a first year chicken. We got new chicks last spring. She has been laying for about 5-6 months now. I'm thinking she should have her act together, but maybe not. Anyway, it seems to be happening less often and the eggs...
I have better luck steaming the eggs. Put about 1 inch of water in a sauce pan. Add a steam basket or rack. Bring to boil. Add eggs. Google how long to steam them for hard, medium, soft cooked eggs. Once the time is finished. Put them in ice water for 2-3 minutes. Now here's what I've...
My chicks are almost 4 weeks old. They have all been active and running around. Then this morning I noticed one of the chicks has developed toes that curl under on both feet and has trouble walking. The chick was fine yesterday. I’ve read similar posts but these all seemed to involve younger...
We had a bobcat get in with ours. It killed all the ones that were unable to fly into the rafters. The dead ones showed little sign of being attacked. It did take one chicken to eat I suppose. The only way we knew it was a bobcat was we captured a picture of it on a nearby game camera.
I noticed my pullet sitting on the roost all day. I wasn’t sure what to do. But I caught her and squeezed her crop. When I did water gushed out of her mouth! I did it several times until not much came out. What could be wrong with her? Do I need to take her to the vet?
I wonder if this is the same one as I found on Amazon.com. They look the same, but it doesn't say it is an Olba brand. https://www.amazon.com/Automatic-Treadle-Feeder-Chickens-Poultry/dp/B01EOXEUHM/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1516845760&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=chicken%2Btreadle%2Bfeeder&th=1
I'd like to hear from anyone who uses treadle feeders. We lose a lot of feed from our open feeder to birds and mice. Suggestions for other options to the open feeder would be much appreciated!! I've looked at some of the available treadle feeders. Prices from $50 to over $100! Are these...
Could she be egg bound if she hasn't laid in a couple of years? She is 5.5 years old. I have not seen her on a nest in months.
She has very runny poop. It sticks to her bottom. Is there some sort of infection she could have that is causing the diarrhea? If so, what sort of medicine would help?
I don't think she has laid in a couple of years. I put her in the tub in the green
house after she'd been acting sick for a couple of days. She's made no attempt to get out.
We have a sick chicken. She has been acting moppy for a week or so. Sort of stands around with her tail tucked and back arched. Her poop is runny and doesn't smell like normal. We have separated her from the rest of the flock and put her in a tub with bedding in our greenhouse, so she can...
We have never given our adult birds any medications. We start the chicks out on one small bag of medicated chick feed. Once that is gone, we switch them to the unmedicated feed.
The only ones we have ever lost were one to a snake when it was a chick and 3 which suddenly dropped dead. I...
How interesting! I just got into Kombucha brewing recently. A friend gave me a jar of kombucha with several old scobys. I started a new batch out of the newest one and saved the middle ones in another jar. I was about to just throw the old ones out, but thought my chickens like them. They...
We have 5 acres about 2 miles from town. No busy roads close by. I know he will probably roam over to our neighbors' properties and will talk to them before we let him out. We do have big trees on our place, so plenty of room for him to roost out of reach of coyotes. We see raccoon...
I was recently given an India Blue Pied peacock for my birthday. We have him penned up for now and he seems to be doing quite well. The question is.....can we eventually allow him to free range without much danger of nighttime predators getting him?
He has quite a few white feathers and I...
