All of our neighbors already have 20-40 chickens. (We all had a lot of losses last summer.) No one can even give away eggs! LOL
We are out in the country about 1.5 hrs from DC, and a lot of our friends and family live in more suburban areas down the road where they can't have hens.
The job is in...
We started keeping chickens about a year ago. We have loved it! However, it appears my husband may be changing jobs for an awesome opportunity. So, we may be moving, cross country, to an area that does NOT allow backyard flocks. (Oddly enough, the city allows flocks, but the burbs we would be in...
Everyone free ranges outside. There really is no way for me to separate them The guineas tend to keep to their own group. When it isn't so gosh darn cold outside they roost in the trees, but lately they've been going in the coop. This is the first injury we've had.
So, I am locking my girls up last night and discover THIS!!! Yep, that is blood. Spattered everywhere. I am freaking out, double and triple head counting. Everyone is there, everyone lets me pet her, no one is acting weird. I noticed yesterday one of my buffs (Meg) looked 'dirty' when she was...
When my girl's crops are full it almost feels like someone put a ping pong ball under their skin! If you don't feed them in the night check in the morning and it should be almost gone. Then after they eat it fills back up - sometimes to seemingly alarming proportions!
Hope yours is happier after...
I am not really concerned about the brown egg being a 'better' egg, I am concerned if this were to indicate a problem with my hen. :-D Not planning on eating the shell.....well, directly anyway. Into the compost they go!
I'll try to get a pic a little later today.
And the oddly colored egg...
Our first flock ever of chickens has (finally!) started laying. Until today, as far as we know, just one girl was laying. A few are starting to show signs they may be getting ready. (Making the "I LAID AN EGG!" cackle, crouching down and letting us pet them. Deep red combs.)
She has laid almost...
We have JUST started getting eggs from our girls. As far as I know only 1 in 12 is laying yet. The eggs are smallish. I know this is normal. My question is: once we start getting eggs regularly how do I know what 'size' they are? I don't want to spend $30 for a fancy scale I don't have room for...
We didn't eat our first two because they were laid outside and I used them as 'examples'. I put them back in the coop in the nest boxes to hopefully 'teach' the girls to lay there. So far as we know only 1 out of 12 is laying yet, just started this week. 4 eggs so far! I am waiting till we get...
Actually the biggest problem is my guineas. They usually roost in the trees, but raise a ruckus until the coop has been opened and their chicken buddies are out. Maybe it will just be loud for a few days!!!
I think it is a little like people who live in Minnesota and people who live in Florida. If you are used 'cold' being 50 degrees then 30 is going to be hard to hack. If 'cold' is -10 degrees then 20 is kinda warm! We have had frost and freezing nights where I have had my front coop windows...
I am super excited that we FINALLY had our first egg from our first flock ever!!!BUT instead of in the coop it was outside next to the house! I have been 'eggpecting' our first egg for the past couple weeks. The girls are 23 weeks old. We have a dozen girls, but there are a few I can't tell...
I should add, sorry to you purists, but I don't really care what the CHICKEN looks like (though the BC pics I have seen are AWESOME!) I am looking for the EGG color.
I am pretty new to chicken keeping, (our first flock.....anxiously awaiting our first egg) and I recently read about Marans having great dark chocolate colored eggs. I heard Black Copper Marans have the darkest eggs of the Marans. Is this true? I would love to have a few, but we don't really...
We lost our first grown chicken today. I couldn't find our very friendly Silver Laced Wyandotte, one of our very favorites. She and our Barred Rock are always the first to come and greet us when we go outside. The chickens free range. All I found was a pile of her feathers under an evergreen...
