Official BYC Poll: The Worst Predator

I voted hawk but it would be coon if not for the fact I can trap coons. More dead coons than dead chickens.

    Pointers with chickens.

Thanks Centrarchid, I am prepared for a lot of training and exercise. They seem to be highly trainable but from what I read, if you dont train them regularly (for mental and physical exercise) they turn to the dark side by destroying things. the dog will have limited time alone with the...

    BYC Militia

never tried that particular type but these are quiter than the sub sonics I have used. They use priming powder... no gun powder. It makes more noise hitting a target than the report. Bought a box of them but I am far enough out that I just use regular 22lr so I dont know how much damage they...

    BYC Militia

10/22 for the small stuff. I have plenty more for the bigger stuff. Fo rthose that need to keep the noise to nothing, check out .22 super colibri. Seriously, less noise than many pellety guns. Travels at about half the speed. No good for semi autos though. Not enough kick.

    Hawk Attack Again

I never let mine free range in the fall or winter for long. When I come home from work I will let them out for the hour or so that I am out there taking care of them and the rabbits. When dark comes they go to bed. Supposedly, letting turkeys or geese range with the chickens will stop many...

    Pointers with chickens.

Thanks. I have been researching the heck out of this. Looking for the right combo of health, ease of grooming, family dog, hiking buddy and willing to leave my birds alone. Do you by chance know... will pointers give you a bark if there is someone approaching? I only know one pointer and he...

    Pointers with chickens.

We are currently checking out dog breeds to decide what we want. I would like a dog that is not likely to attack my chickens and ducks and will scare off predators when he is out. I was thinking of a pointer, particularly a German Shorthaired Pointer since they are bred to not attack the bird...

    Good Luck, Boonsboro, MD!

I live just outside town limits... Even though it doesnt change anything about my property, I am glad to hear that we are making progress. If anyone is bothered by the noise or smell of just 3 hens, then they better hope a dog never moves in next to them. If they dont allow the chickens...

Breed good at avoiding predators and good foragers?

Quote: No luck with RIR's. was given a few hens on 2 different occassions. They never lasted long. One would think they would be good since they are a heritage breed.

Breed good at avoiding predators and good foragers?

I used to leave my white leghorn roo out all night if he refused to go inside... half hoping something would take him. Never lost a white chicken to predators but have lost every other color. I wonder if white is as easy for a hawk or other predators to see as we think. It may just be that...

Breed good at avoiding predators and good foragers?

Quote: I was always told not to feed dogs chicken bones because they splinter and can choke the dog... maybe thats how they kill them. haha.

Breed good at avoiding predators and good foragers?

Several people recommend brown leghorns. What about white leghorns? I dont have a source on browns and whites are supposed to be far better layers. I was thinking about a few barred rocks that wont be able to fly over teh 4' fence and a few leghorn hens that can fly out of the chicken yard...

Breed good at avoiding predators and good foragers?

Thanks everyone. Brown leghorns may fit the bill. I had a white leghorn rooster (earlier meantioned) who was a great protector but couldn't keep him since my kids wouldnt go in the yard and I had to carry a stick or get flogged. Not sure what breeds OEGB and RLR's are.

Breed good at avoiding predators and good foragers?

After raising Ameraucanas, and relising they have less than a bird brain. Last summer / fall I lost all of the ameraucanas and none of my other birds. Plus, they don't forage worth a darn. Not all bird were created equal. My two biggest predators are hawks and this summer, I think it was a...

    free range pigeon loft

I once found directions on how to build a loft that had an entrance for free ranging the birds. It was designed to allow the pigeons to fly in easily and escape a hawk that was hot on it's tail. It also was designed to keep raccoons and possum out. If anyone has info please let me know. Or...

WV Spring ChickenStock Sat. April 24 8-12 TSC Martinsburg

I am looking for contact for the guy I bought my rabit from. He was the guy with the 3 male muscovy ducks in a cage in the back of his pickup truck and several other very tame rabits. The rabit was the most adorable male 'broken black' (black and white) velveteen lop. I just wanted to ask him...

Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Are Ameraucanas generally poor at foraging? I thought I found the perfect breed for my yard but I have noticed that some of mine have no clue as to what to eat. They will eat dandelions and clovers if I pick them for them but not on their own. Also, when I throw worms in there for them my...

what breed of rooster is the quietest?

Quote: Just to tick you off!!! The crowing is almost enough to make me switch to ducks. I love watching my birds around the yard but I am afraid to let them run without a roo. We have hawks and I have witnessed my roo save a girl from a redtail (actually hit her and I thought she would be...
