Game chicken feed or feed produced at local mills normally has animal byproducts and fat here, so you might check. Locally milled feed is also considerably cheaper than name brand feeds. Ours will even custom mill small batches (300 lbs. or so) to your specifications for protein, calcium...

Kcarp03, Fermented feed is great and very easy. If you are raising chicks or ducks, they LOVE it. Simple method is put some feed in a bucket, make it soupy and add any apple cider vinegar that has the "mother" in it. Heinz has it and the original is Braggs apple cider. You stir it daily for...

I started out feeding an all-flock feed that was higher protein and gave them oyster shell on the side. I then went to a custom mix of whole grains mixed with all-flock, catfish feed, and alfalfa pellets. (Oyster shell and grit on the side again.) They also had free range time and if they...

Will do. Good luck! I know everyone always wants to put their hands in and feel the birds. EE!! We haven't heard much of anything on avian flu, but it doesn't run during the heat. It is a cool weather if I remember correctly.

I'm technically not supposed to be around any form of poultry. I need to find out exactly how strictly they mean that to be enforced. I'm not sure how you would enforce it because if I go to the Coop to pick up dog food, seeds, etc. I'm being exposed to possible sources of contagion. How...

I haven't noticed that. My difference has always been light egg layers versus dual purpose versus meat bird breeds. My light egg layers (such as the blue egg layers from UofA were very young. My heritage dual purpose were always the latest. My absolute oldest birds were actually my OEGB's...

If you want protective hens & roosters that will go broody and raise theirs or anyone else's broods try Sumatras. They are very popular in AR because Dr. Bramwell at the UofA Fayetteville breeds them. You should be able to pick up a pair or trio fairly easily. They aren't the world's best...

Smell free & easy to clean run floor

Dry is good. Wet is BAAAD! Any chicken pen that stays wet will smell and attract flies. Any kind of organic matter thrown into the pen on top of the dirt will help keep the smell down. Grass clippings after you mow, raked leaves in the fall, pine straw, hay bales, etc. Just make sure that...

    Can Hens Drink Whey?

I'm not sure about chickens, but I know that my pigs love the stuff. An easy way to keep the chickens from wasting it would be the same way I do with the pigs. Dampen a bowl of their feed with the whey to whatever consistency you like that will stay in the bowl. I'm pretty sure it will be...

I don't know what it is about the splash, but all of the ones I had were much flightier than the blues and blacks. The only other splash birds I ever raised were splash Marans and all of that breed I ever raised were super calm. Only milder tempered I had were my RI's from Jim Heinz & my...

I am so sorry for your traumatic experience. That is when I would get rid of a roo. Again sorry for your issue, but that would be my solution. I have only had one roo that would attack chicks. He came to an abrupt end. I believe genetics have a lot to do with character faults in animals...

Girls almost ready to go out to the coop but it's SOOO hot!

Summer heat can really be an issue with those of us that live in the South. I would definitely put up a tarp or something to provide sufficient shade. Shallow pans of water that the birds can wade in when older will also help. At 3 weeks of age, I would be more concerned with how cold it gets...

    Arkansas Meet-Ups, Swaps and Such

Especially the bantams!!! It is different when they haven't been exposed all their life. My oldest daughter had some doubts. However, she quickly decided that the pigs we fed out were quite tasty. :) Good luck on convincing the family. You know what the ones you raise have been fed.

I found with mine that the pullets and hens were only skittish in the coops or pens. When free-ranging they would keep an eye on me, but didn't panic when in close proximity. My roo never did relax. He was ALWAYS high strung and acted like he knew I was planning on having him for dinner.

See, I was farm-raised. We bottle fed calves and then happily let them return the favor of feeding us. However, you are right about some breeds. I am pretty sure I couldn't force myself to eat any of the black fleshed breeds. Cold chills at the very idea. LOL
