Boiled guinea eggs are HARD to peel! :)

Any suggestions I can try specifically for guinea eggs? I've read the suggestions for chicken eggs, and will try those, but wondered if anyone knew anything else I could try since guinea egg shells themselves are WAY harder than regular chicken eggs. Thanks!

    Why the sudden change???

Why would over half of my 4 month old guineas suddenly decide to settle down for the night in the wood chips on the floor of their coop, after several months of them all happily perching side-by-side on the two highest of the three roosts that are in the coop? The three roosts are not close...

Question concerning the deep litter method...what am I doing wrong here?

I must not be doing something right! I understood that deep litter with regular turning would settle the poop underneath and keep the top layer pretty dry and clean. Yes, I do see that. BUT..... I also see TONS of their crumbles (hanging feeder, were on starter, now on layer) at the very...

Need advice regarding (preventing, hopefully!) hawk attacks

My guineas are almost 12 weeks old, have been out in their coop and pen since they were almost 3 weeks old. This past week I started letting 2 - 3 out of the pen each day to investigate for an hour or so. I was always close by, somewhere in the yard. Today I let 4 out and noticed a hawk...

First update in I can't remember how long! (with pics and a video)

I hadn't realized until yesterday that I hadn't posted on here in FOREVER it seems, so thought I'd kinda update the last month or so: Here's our coop completed except for the final rock and cement pavers we'll add for more security (and decoration) around the wire skirting of the pen and...

    Picked up my babies yesterday!

Yay! I got the call to come pick up my babies yesterday! 11 little fuzzies! Pictures attached (of course!) ... first time in their new brooder (through the side of it, so it's a little hazy!), first good night's sleep in their new home , and finally, bright and early this morning, all ready...

Just making sure I have everything ready!

Morning!!! Just a few final questions.... I should be getting my new keets very soon and want to be sure I have everything ready. Brooder with wire in lid and heat lamp (start them at 95 degrees), waterer (start them with a sip or two of warm or room temp water), medicated 25-30% protein...

    Metal guinea decor........ anybody?

Hey all! I've have been looking high and low for metal guinea decorations for my coop walls. All I've found (they are on ebay) are the flat cutouts of a coop that personalize your coop with the letters also cut out. And a few free-standing ceramic figurines. What I'd LIKE to have are some...

Have you named your Guinea coops?

What are some of your coop names that are unique just for 'guineas'? (I'm not sure whether there is already a post here about that...? I looked a little, but didn't see anything in this section! Please point me in the right direction if it's here!) I've looked at the cute-as-can-be coop...

Your opinions about roosts for guineas

What are your opinions on roosts for guineas? Any advantages of one type over the other? I was going to go with 2-3 spaced on graduated levels (like steps?) until I saw some that look just like a small ladder mounted horizontally.... this idea was to keep the guineas from fussing over the...

Banding vs keets tender baby legs....?

I'm still pondering how to go about marking my keets (when I get them!) to be able to tell them apart. Marking their little heads with food coloring seems simple enough, except there aren't 10-12 colors! Not too sure about using permanent markers on those sweet baby heads! Aren't those...

    Identifying individual keets?

How can you tell which keet is which, and not overlook one, when you are trying to handle each one several times a day? Also, when you begin to let them outside of the run for the first time, you are supposed to let one or two out at a time, and let different ones out the next time. So, is...

Looking for keets for spring 2012

We will be building a coop and fencing the area this fall, as soon as it cools off! Who can I get my name on a list with for 1-day-old keets for next spring 2012? I am in upstate SC, would prefer to pick them up in the area (Greenville). Also, I am open to trying to hatch some eggs in an...
