    Gut Loaded Meal Worms

Big and juicy meal worms for sale!!! The price of mealworms got to be too ridiculous so I started raising them myself and now I usually have WAY too many. I try to feed these worms well as what goes in to them also goes into the chickens - wheat bran, oat bran, apples, bananas, carrots...

Toe with scales missing, pink and smooth

Not the best picture but I think you can see what I mean. We noticed it a few days ago. She doesn't seem to be hurt or favoring it in any way, just wondering if this is a sign of something else... Anyone?

    For Those Observing Lent

One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written, it's a good way to start Ash Wednesday (and my first day of NO EGGS until Holy Week!):

    Condor Cam

The San Diego Zoo is going to have a camera focused on a hatching condor egg along with its parents. It's not due to hatch until early March: "Right now, Shatash and Sisquoc are tending to a life-like faux egg while theirs sits in an incubator. Closer to the end of the 52-day incubation...

I think this trap is pretty effective if you can handle the corpse smell:

    Anybody seen this before?

This is Scrappy, a White Amberlink, supposedly less than 2 years old. For months my wife has been asking me not post any pics of Scrappy looking like this but I really want to know what the heck is wrong with her. She's the best bird we've had - smartest, happiest, best layer, most friendly...

    Papal Chickens

Found an article today about the Papal Farms at Castel Gandolfo and was pleasantly surprised to see they have 300 chickens (from which they get 200 eggs a day) as well as 60 they raise for meat. Are the ones in the photo Buff Orpingtons or something else?

    Question about first eggs

Four of my chickens are about thirteen weeks and am starting to get excited at adding some new eggs to the daily collection basket in the near future. Will first-time layers automatically go to the nesting boxes (that they've seen the older chickens do) or do the eggs come upon them as a...

Austin, TX: Does anyone here TRULY know how many hens you may keep?

Despite my urge to own one of every type of chicken in the world, I think ten is a pretty good number for a backyard in the city. It seems to be the consensus in Austin, TX that ten is the maximum number of chickens that you are allowed to keep according to Code. How this consensus came about...

    Zombie chickens - it's true!!!

So I'm constantly reading here about how the best way to introduce new birds to an established coop is to put them in there at night and in the morning the old birds will wake up and assume that those other ones have always been there. NOW I can understand how this is so correct. Our older...

Enormous crop on a 5 day old chick?

Just got this Speckled Sussex chick yesterday afternoon and thought the crop seemed a bit big but this evening it looks enormous. I've noticed that she's been drinking a heck of a lot of water and is pooping very watery because of it. She's only 5 days old and seems to be eating a little less...

    Another roo or hen guess-it-game

This "girl" was sold to me as a Feather-Legged Cuckoo Marans. It's obviously NOT a "Cuckoo" and I got suggestions from some of you here as to what it might be and the consensus seems to be that it's a Splash Marans. Right now it's not even three weeks old and has started developing a heck of a...

    Chicken Spectacles

From LIFE magazine: Spectacles to be worn by hens in order to prevent their eyes being injured by the beaks of other birds. Patented December 10, 1902, by Andrew Jackson Jr. (no relation to the former president of the United States).

    Question about Feather-Legged Cuckoo Marans

I purchased a Cuckoo Maran and a Feather-Legged Cuckoo Maran yesterday. Every feather-legged breed I've seen develops the feathers on the legs within the first week or so but the Maran is still bare legged at about 9 days. She has characteristically different markings than the standard Cuckoo...
