Two dead in one day..thanks, dh and dog!

I love my dog. He is very sweet, but he does like to chase the chickens. For this reason, when they are free ranging, he is locked in the dog yard rather than having free-range, himself. I asked my son, husband standing right there, to let the birds out (24 of them) and lock up the dog about...

    Clutch is hatching..how long?

Our last babies came all within a couple of hours, but these 14 are different. How long should it take from the first to last to hatch and when should I discard unhatched eggs?

Orange oil and white vinegar for pests??

I've been using solution of orange oil, white vinegar, and water for cleaning and since vinegar is a natural disinfectant, I started spraying down all the coop's surfaces with it as well as all of the supports around the yard and outdoor roosts. I know it has helped the overall smell of the...

MUST one keep roosters in a flock????

Frankly, I'm just tired of dealing with two of my roos. I have 24 pullets and three roos, one of which is a tiny guy, but the boss man and I wouldn't get rid of him for anything bc we just love him. I have a GLC whom I used to love, but he now attacks my daughter with a vengeance and I've not...

The girls are doing the backstroke!

Hey, ya'll..I'm in Central FL and we live in a bit of a basin, which TS Debby is flooding the crap out of. I have 28 birds and one coop with two separate yards connected to it, both of which are flooded with more rain on the way. Can anyone suggest whether they are better off free-ranging and...

I know I'm beautiful, but pullet or cockerel?

Looks just like Big Ben, but, at the same age, smaller in general, smaller and not as red a comb, no brown or rust anywhere, and legs a little smaller and darker wash. Is there even a chance I'm a girl??

    Trying one more time..help, please!

My farm manager took a couple of roos off my hands today, but wouldn't take this little black beauty as he thinks she's a pullet. I thought rust on the back and shoulders meant cockerel. If she is a he, he must go asap. I'd also like to know the breed, but gender is most important.

    Black chicken questions

I have several young, black chickens. Two were very easy to figure out were cockerels, two are easily females. I have one that has me stumped. I was told they are all Ameracaunas, but I bellieve she's an Austalorp. What has me stumped is her coloring. She does have some dark rust coming thru on...

Pics for breed help..and a few gender questions, please!

What breed is this young lady? And this one? Am I a pullet? A have no rust anywhere, very short tail feathers, and a small, pink comb. What breed am I? Rust on the shoulders = probably cockerel, right? What is Mirabelle?

Please tell me I finally have this figured out!

Lighter-colored breeds with big, yellow legs are (usually?) cockerels and in the case of my black birds, the dark-washed legs are pullets and the lighter legs are cockerels - generally. Yes?

    Emergency hydration??

Hubs was SO proud of himself when he told me day-before-yesterday that he cleaned and filled both water jugs..a 5 gallon in the big girls' yard and a 3 gal in the nursery. Went out an hour ago to feed, play, etc. to find that the dip$hit didn't take the cover off of the spout when he put the 3...

    All black..what are they?

4 birds all about 12 wks or so. They are getting big rather quickly, all black, have muffs, but no beards, a little bit of greenish showing thru on wings, shortish tails. They look identical except for comb shapes and sizes. Just one has a rose comb, but all combs are rather small and not too...

    HELP..Barred Rock he/she debate..

They are 14 weeks tomorrow and were born just hours apart. We shall call them #1 and #2...#1 has, in my opinion, a) larger comb, wattles and ear pads, b) longer, curvier tail feathers at more of an angle; #2 has a) shorter, stubbier comb, smaller ear pads b) shorter tail feathers more straight...
