I was in a super rush to get to my daughter's Christmas concert, so I emptied my pockets of three eggs and just stuck them in the front door on the stairs. The chickens were closed up for the night, but the eggs had to wait until I got home to be washed and put away.
Fast forwards two hours...
Somehow (I blame the bunny!) the light in the coop was ripped down yesterday. We have no power in the coop, so I had strung an extension cord up to have a light. I thought it was fool proof. I had even really pulled on it to make sure it was not coming down. Somehow it came down. Popped off...
This is my third winter with chickens. Each year I get some new tricks to help me manage. This year I am at the point of retiring my coop. I am so frustrated.
Here is the rundown. ANY advice or any words are helpful at this point.
DLM for 9 chickens.
No running water. I pack out 4...
I hear a noise in our (attached) garage and think the racoons may be back. We neglected to close the door when it grew dark. I open the door and stick my head out. Three feet from me is a HUGE BEAR laying on his belly munching on the garbage. He had tipped over the can and was going to town...
When we butcher grouse (after they are dead) we stand on the wings, grab the legs and pull. The breast and wings detach beautifully and cleanly. A small touch up and they are excellent. No gutting, no plucking.
Today we thought, why not try it with the banties? We were disposing of 2/3 of...
Walk me through this. I just drip it on the vent or in the vent or.....?
I need to know who is laying regularly, so I can be rid of those lazy freeloaders.
I have 23 chickens- 2 roos and 21 hens. A few standards, some banty EEers, and some Japanese banties. Standards range in age between 1-3 years, banties are 1-4 years old. I am going through one big bag of feed a week and getting 1-2 eggs a day. Yes, ONE or TWO eggs a day. All the banties...
With chickens I mean?
I talk chickens, dream of chickens, love my chickens. My hubby, eh, not so much. He grew up on a small family farm and had to do chicken (and cow, and pig) stuff all his childhood. He doesn't see the joy in it other than fresh eggs. He does remark on the advnacements...
You know when you read too much at BYC when you start dreaming of it.
Last night I dreamt I cracked open an egg to find a FOUR YOLKER!! I turned to my hubby and he shrugged and said, 'well, look at the coop'. I looked out the window and there was a big neon sign above my coop that...
We just got ten mixed breed chickens. They were never let out of their coop and have quite long toe nails. The nails curl and make the toe kind of crooked. It is very noticable. I never thought much of toe nails, as my own flock never had a problem. They scratch to their hearts content in...
How long do chickens last in a normal, farm raised, somewhat 'spoiled' life? If you were to let nature take it's course?
How old ws your oldest chicken? And do roos live longer than egg producing hens?
My elderly lady has a big old poopy butt. Always. I catch her and wash her off, but the next day it is back. I had to work these past few days, so I did not have time to chase her and wash her and she had a massive poopy butt- like a tennis ball hanging there. Not ON her vent, but under, on...
Some chicks. Just over a week old. (New stock, all mixed)
My first hatching. Mama is a mix, Pappa is a huge BO. About 8 weeks old. Fully integrated with my adults now.
And stink eyes from my adults. Mixed EE something. Roo is a BO
One egg hatched this morning. Nothing from the other three eggs. (Started with 14 eggs, ended up with 4 in lockdown) Poor little guy is lonely. She is still in the bator, chirping away at the other eggs. I have little hope they will hatch, though.
No feed stores sell chicks in my area...
