I know that the Sweetgrass is not a variety accepted by the APA at this time, but I’d like to do my best to make pairings most in line with what the “standards” may be in the future. I love this variety and plan to do my best to promote, show if possible, and help these beautiful birds gain the...
My friend got some 3-4 month old poults yesterday.
They came from a farm where they were getting cold water, no heat access, and access to come and go from their barn.
All their birds looked healthy and happy (Id estimate ~50 turkeys of various ages, and a handful of bantam chickens that ran in...
Using Ivermectin pour on
5mg per mL
One group of rescue ducks that have an active infestation.
The rest of the birds on the property just as maintenance/ to play it safe despite no signs of mites.
No one is laying rn, due to age or the season, depending on the group- so egg withdrawal is not...
Photos to follow; we are driving away w the ducks and they are headed to better homes once they are ready....
They had a nice, large area under cover, supposed to be 1-2 years old, 2 runners and 7 Welsh Harlequin, all hens.
The previous owner has fallen on hard times + health issues.... we...
I’m making turkey soup tonight and have tried several times to blanch the feet.... but I can not get the skin off the bottom of the foot.
I’ve tried re blanching in the simmering water (about 30 seconds per try) but I’m in 4x at this point and just can’t get it apart.
It is a fresh turkey that...
I have a friend who is interested in getting some fertile Ayam Cemani eggs, and would like me to incubate them for her, as I’ve hatched out many duck and turkey eggs...and she doesn’t have a ‘bator.
I’m fascinated by the color.... but I don’t think I’m interested in the basically bantam sized...
I know I should have started a few days ago, but.
I didn’t. Life got in the way. Oh well.
I have a young BR Tom that will be in the oven for Thursday. (~6 mos)
I’ve seen so many articles about brining or not, cooking at high temps vs low and slow.... I’ve cooked a handful of BR and Holland...
I have some ~4 month old Sweetgrass turkeys, and am trying to do what I can to determine gender.
Hatched about 8/1
I am looking at color, snoods, wattles, carnuncle development, leg thickness....
All of those give me an idea (I know it isn’t a guarantee as some times the Toms are late...
So, we have some Boubon red turkeys that came from Murray McMurray.
Our Tom is a deep red, almost a chocolate brown, with almost black tips on his body feathers
Our hen is much more “bright” red than the Tom. Their offspring have been darker/ closer to dads color in most cases.
I met a...
Our American Chinchilla rabbits waste
-so much-
Timothy hay
30$ a 3 string bale is a lot when I’m taking out the piles of waste 😞
We give them hay in their slow feeders (on the side of their cages, checked and re filled whenever they are empty) plus at least a handful inside each cage...
I have a group of Sweetgrass turkeys that I’ve been SO excited to bring in, and they are doing amazing!!
I have a couple of questions-
First
....does anyone have any photos of Sweetgrass “teenagers” at about 2 -3 mos old?
I would just like to compare color development. I’d also love to know...
We have been running staggered hatches (2-3 weeks apart generally) most of the summer.
We have 2 HovaBator forced air incubators. One w auto turners, a 1588, and 2370 as a Hatcher. Both w humidikits.
The Hatcher gets shut off, cleaned, has time to dry out- and gets set up again 2-3 days...
How can you tell the difference between w Welsh Harlequin drake, and a Silver Appleyard drake?
Also curious about the hens.... but I think the eye “stripes” on the hens is the indicator...
I do have pix of the drake I feel confident was a Welshie, as well as pix of the boy we currently have -...
I have 5 ducklings (welshies) from Metzer- and one from my own flock (a welsh mix drake that I’ve not found a home for)
They are 5 weeks old from the hatchery and 4 weeks old from my incubator.
I started moving them to the “see / no touch” pen next to the main “big kid” duck yard 5 days ago...
First and foremost, I don’t care if I’m right or wrong per se, I’m just curious -
I’ve poured over the forums. I’ve seen posts from people who think they can sex very young poults by the shape of their head, vent sexing, holding them up and watching tail/ legs.... etc.
I’m only on a learning...
I have -really- tried to do my homework before asking for help.... but I haven’t found anything that seems quite like the issue my BR hen is having right now.
I only have one BR hen, with one Tom, in their own large area. Free access to water, food, grit, 24/7. I do shut them into their coop...
I know this is a long shot- but does anyone have a photo of what a “healthy” membrane should look like just before/ at hatch?
My last duck eggs hatched late and needed assistance. The turkeys came out pretty well.
I thought the last ducklings needed help because the turkey poults kicked the...
I “renewed” my Welsh Harlequin flock last summer, due to them having aged out of laying after ~ 5 years, and picked up some juvenile ducklings that did (although not fully feathered out) appear to be pure welshies - which is how they were advertised on an ad locally.
Well. One hen is a baby from...
Creative / brainstorming solutions welcome!
We hatch ducklings and turkey poults in our bator
We are newish to incubating, and want to have higher success rates so I’m hoping those of you with more experience can help -
- we have two forced air HovaBator bators (1588 for incubating and 2370 for...
Sooo
I picked up some Welsh harlequin ducklings last summer, to give my WH duckling that we hatched from known lines some friends that weren’t turkeys 😂
They were a bit older than her, but we got the flocks integrated in a fair amount of time. The adults look like welshies, possibly w some...
