    Houdini learns a new skill

We have a chicken that has been named Houdini as she is always escaping the run. Here she is helping DH with some truck maintenance. Poor guy, hope she's not hen-pecking him too much. :lau

Link doesn't insert where the cursor is

Not sure if it's my tablet or what...when I try and use the link icon to insert a link, it puts the link at the front of my message and not where my cursor is. I'm using an Android tablet and it does tend to jump around when viewing threads, depending upon the ad that is on the screen. In...

SL Wyandotte - 5 week old

I have 3 SLW that are 5 weeks old. Is it too early to say cockerel or pullet? I noticed today that one of the three has way more white and maybe possibly feathers that seem to be pointed instead of round. Anywho...to soon to tell if cockerel?

    Brooding in the Coop

I just wanted to thank @Blooie @aart @feathermaid and @blackdog043 for your articles and threads regarding the mama heating pad and brooding in coop. I can say it works and is much easier than brooding in my house (did that once...won't happen again). On 4/8, I got 3 SLW's that were hatched...

    Little bugs...lice, mites, ?

Anyone have an idea of what kind of bug this is. It's little and sorta clearish white. There is no "red streaks" when doing the paper towel test under the roost. I see no nits or infestation on chickens.

    No, don't cry...laugh instead

Just a story...We adopted a 8 yo Jack Russell Terrier in Oct. I've worked with him quite a bit, regarding his chicken behavior. He most always ignores them, but does occasionally look at them thru the run (no free ranging). His job is to keep mice and chipmunks under control. Today was a...

    Scratchy throat? Crop issue?

I have a Delaware (Debbie) pullet that is approx. 18 weeks old that is doing neck stretching and beak movement type behavior. Have not notice this before today. She (and two other same age pullets) have been integrated with 5 other pullets (who are almost 1 year old) for the last 6 weeks or...

Do you have a Harbor Freight Greenhouse? How is it?

We've been researching the HF greenhouse and *know* it needs mods to make it structurally better...but, otherwise, thoughts on it? We've seen a 'super coupon' for it, I think it was $229 (for the 6x8 version).

    Winterized the run

Our run is a carport frame with chain link on the lower half and wire on the top half. To protect from snow and wind, I stapled plastic to 1x2's. Then drilled holes thre the 1x2. They were zip tied around the carport frame. I stapled the plastic's bottom edge to the wood frame that is used...

5 pullets...4 eggs, a soft shell and shell-less in one day?

We have 5 pullets. Yesterday was the first day we got 5 eggs...This an when I did my early morning routine, there was a soft shell egg and a shell less egg on the poop board. When I went back mid day, there were 3 good eggs in the nesting box. I figured that was all for the day. But, I went...

    Making the Ratproof Feeder portable?

I recently got the Rat Proof feeder and have just now put it in the chicken run. Due to bears, I have to remove the feeder each night. Today was my first time putting away the Ratproof feeder. To keep the weight down, I will not fill it full of feed; but it's still kinda awkward to carry...

    Not a good sign...

Just had a visitor and it's not even remotely dark. Hubby just said he will no longer be feeding the deer in non hibernation months.

Solar Electric Fence for bear deterrent

Our main predators are bears and we understand it's very hard to bear proof. We are planning an electric fence around the coop/run. Anyone have suggestions for a solar electric fence charger that has sufficient joules for a bear or ? The Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks recommend "for...

How do you get your chickens to the chicken tractor?

Plans for a hoop chicken tractor are in the works...wondering how to get the girls to the tractor. Thinking there must be an easier way than trying to herding 7 chickens across 10 acres. I did find the Little chicken wagon. @Gargoyle are you still using the 2nd version or is the an even newer...

Scoop for use with pine chips/shread/shavings

What do you use to clean poop from shavings? I've seen the Goliath litter scoop and others similar, am not sure if the pine will fall thru and leave the poop though. Currently I've been trying to use a plastic rake turned up side down. We are using pine shavings, made from our chipper, on...

    Light Brahma's leg feathers

Do Brahma's have leg feathers on the inside of their leg/shank or just the outside? Our pulleys are almost 16 months old and the inside of the legs have no feathers or indication that will have some. I've been trying to look at images online, but I'm not having much luck.
