    Just found dead roo

Yeah, nuts! I can't tell what happened. There's a lot feathers all over the place. No signs of trauma at all, but most of the feathers on his breast are gone - nearly bare. Any ideas? Any ideas on what to do with him now?

    A little older - a little bolder...

And finally out of the dining room! \\o/ But what are they? What's Scarlet? What's Peep? What's Brownie? What's Pecker (the middle arrow)? What's Hershey and Godiva? Are they really the Marans I paid for?

Coop is done! Well, inhabitable at least...

Holy moly! At long last, our poor chickens are finaly off the dining room table and into their new home. Still got to build the run and paint everything, but they were getting way too cramped in the Sterilite brooders. And, we were way too over the chicken dust! I'm curious to see if the kids'...

I've read about the bloody poo I found, but...

...it was just the one time - i've been hovering over them all morning and haven't seen any more. Nobody's acting any differently. I checked everyone's vents and couldn't find any traces of blood. My flock ranges from 4-7weeks old and are on Purina medicated starter. So, does cocci cause...

    Roofing question

I'm about ready to start putting the slant roof on, but not entirely sure how to go about it. I'm thinking about using OSB (painting it) and then something else on top of that, but what? Corrugated plastic/fiberglass/whatever seems ok. Shingles seem expensive. It rains a lot and hard where I'm...

Not that I'm all into labels, but do people like us have a title? How about... CHICKENEERS!

    CO-OP vs. Purina

Besides $10, what the difference? The Purina chick/starter feed smells, umm... foodier? But, so what? Is Purina any more nutritious or better than the CO-OP brand?

Links should open in a new window/tab!

Hey, BYC admins - Why do you want ppl to leave you site? Clicking on a link in the forums should really open a new window or tab. It's kinda frustrating (at 1:am) when you follow a link to sombody's flckr page and 20 pics deep you realize that BYC is looong gone. In reality, it's easy enough to...

How tall should the coop be?

I'm still drawing up my coop plans and a this question came up in a another thread. My flock will ideally be maxed out at 10 chicks. Going by the rule (4sf/bird) I'm looking at an 8'x5' coop. So, how tall should it be? Is there a rule for that? I see that roosts need to be higher than the...

    Plastic hardware cloth?

Ok, so I've read up on hardware in the various threads, so I went to check it out - EXPENSIVE! Total sticker shock! I'm standing there doing the geometry and adding it all up - ZOINKS!!! So, now I'm looking at the other fence products at Lowe's. A couple of the plastic meshes seemed pretty...

    Windows and vents?

I'm drawing up plans for new coop, so which way should the windows go? North/South? East/West? Wind usually blows from the West. Or am I over thinking this? ^__^; Vents high and low, right? Thanks!

How do I go about building a coop?

Ok, my little chicks are about feathered out and they're rapidly out growing the brooder. I got a few questions... 1) So now, I'm looking at some plans modifying as a I see fit. We have 5 chicks now, we may expand to 10 later on. The rule is 4 sq ft/bird in the coop and 10 sq ft/bird in the...

Adding chickens to a flock - yea or nay?

Ok, so the 5 little whatever-we-haves are close to feathering out (I to get on that coop!). Of course, we caught chicken fever, so now we'd like to get some specific breeds. However that would mean adding more chickens to an established flock. Is that really a super bad thing to do?

    New to BYC and... CHICKENS!

Hi, everyone! Like I said, I'm extremely new to this whole "chicken" thing - the Easter Bunny just kinda dropped them off along with the candy! So, now we've got 5 chicks (Sleepy didn't wake up) and I gotta figure out this deal FAST! >_<; If I'm real still, I can think I can SEE them growing...
