Now that the hatch is done... it has been an adventure! I’m going to include the good, the bad, and the stupid , for any newbies considering emu. Here’s what I’ve learned this past week:
Raising emu chicks is exhausting.
If you think chicks and chickens have a death wish, you’ve never...
4 Emu eggs went into the GQF 1502 on Saturday, February 1. Hatch day should be the week of 3/22/20. :fl:fl:fl
It was difficult to tell which end was up on all of them! We guessed, so there may eventually be pics with the writing on the eggs upside down LOL.
About a week ago, one of our Serama pullets quit walking. She lays down with legs extended in front of her. She is able to scootch around in a circle, but that’s about it. We can’t externally feel an egg inside her, but who knows. Crop is fine. She doesn’t seem injured. She’s alert, vocal, and...
I meant to do this earlier, but life was crazy with the holidays.
We are on day 41 with 2 emu eggs. We are incubating in a GQF 1502 at 97°. Dehumidifier running in the room, bowl of rice in the incubator, and inside the incubator I’ve added a small computer like fan on the bottom shelf set to...
We decided to go ahead and incubate the 2 emu eggs. I wasn’t going to because our cabinet incubator hasn’t given us great hatches, and I wanted to get it checked out. Egg or incubator problem, who knows?! The other incubators are full, and we need the auto turn because we aren’t here 2-3 days...
Just for curiosity's sake, any guesses what breed mix the buff girl on the left is? She is our only mix.
She hatched from a green egg. (Not our eggs/chickens) So, I figure an EE mix of some sort. My guess is Buff Orpington x EE, only because I think she has an Orpington personality.
Each year we dress up our dogs for the costume parade at my bf’s nursing home. They are always a hit with residents and staff. Their costumes this year... :jumpy:love
I give... how do you get the egg sacs off of the feather base? Here’s what I’ve tried:
Soaking for 7 min in a Dawn bath. Soak for a few minutes in clear water. Soak 7 minutes in apple cider vinegar bath. Dry. Dust at feather base with DE.
This is our 3rd bath in 3-4 weeks.
I DO NOT see any...
I’m having trouble posting tonight, sorry if this is a duplicate.
The results are in! You all were right about the white Silkie, it’s a cockerel. I didn’t really need the dna test, he grew streamers last week lol. :sick The five 1month olds.. 3 cockerels and 3 pullets.
A month ago I hatched a variety of rare breeds. I’ve identified most, but I still have 2 pullets and 1 cockerel that I’m having trouble identifying. I *think* they might be Icelandics—they can look like pretty much anything—but I’m not sure.
Our mix of eggs included:
Ayam Cemani (none hatched)...
I bought a used 1502 (yellow, little bit older one) a couple months ago, from a reliable source, who didn’t seem to have any problems with it. I have had the worst time incubating/hatching with it.
I have several thermometers placed inside the incubator. While not terribly accurate...
Awaiting dna results for some of our Silkies. Play the guessing game with me on this one while we wait?? I’ll post the results to this thread once we have the results. (2 weeks or so)
14 weeks old. My guess is pullet. I thought it was pullet from 1 Day old. I think that mostly because of...
Cross posting with state forums and CL.
We are starting to be outnumbered by cockerels around here. All purebred and from very good lines. We are located in MA/NH...sorry, no, we can’t ship. If interested in updates pics of a certain one, please let me know. Looking to rehome the following:
18...
We finished our last hatch for July over the weekend. Now, on to August! :yesss: What is everyone hatching/planning to hatch in August?
We got a good deal on a used GQF Electronic Sportsman 1502 over the wknd. This is our first cabinet incubator, so we are pretty excited to give it a go. I set...
We have 5 shipped eggs going into lockdown today. The eggs had a rough trip. Saddle air cells, detached, and maybe liquid in one too.
I know having any hatch is a long shot, but how should these eggs be placed into lockdown for hatching?
We are trying to figure out if our Polish is getting picked on, or if it could be bugs causing her problems. Her wing is the worst, it’s terrible. It is scabbed and missing lots of feathers. However, she is using it normally. The back of her head, and under her wing, are suffering similarly...
