    Dying hen

I'm about experience the first loss from my flock. I have a hen that hasn't been eating, and today she couldn't walk. I took her out, put her in a crate and have been syringe-feeding electrolyte fluids. There are no signs of injury or disease on her that I can see, and everyone else is fine...

    Pleasant surprise at Lowe's

I was looking over the gardening section and lo and behold, they now carry DE! A 1lb. bag was almost $5, which is a bit pricey, but hey, at least they have it now. And the cost could be worth it if you factor in shipping and convenience. I think it's a good sign that a product like DE is...

    Signs of spring

This time last week the South was gearing up to deal with a big winter snow storm. Today it got up to 80 degrees. Talk about a 180! I was unable to resist doing some spring planting, but I held myself to just putting in lettuce and onions. Oh, and a new blueberry bush. Even doing just that...

How long can my dog "hold it"? ;)

It's pouring down rain and cold here, and my GSD is absolutely refusing to go out and go potty! It's now 9:40am, and she hasn't gone since 9 last night. It's now at 12 and a half hours, and in spite of me letting her out every 30 minutes, she won't even go off the porch. Maybe I should start...

    NC meet-up anniversary

Tomorrow marks the 1-year anniversary of the big North Carolina meet-up in Raleigh. We got our first chickens that day, mets loads of great people and had an overall great time. So here's a shout-out to everyone who was there, and hopefully we can do it again someday.

    I want a barn

I've heard a lot about the "law of attraction" thing that states that if you declare openly and publicly what you want, you'll eventually receive it. Ok, it's probably a bunch of hooie, but I do really, REALLY want a barn! So it can't hurt to try this, right? I am hereby declaring that I...

    My little finch died

She passed this morning. She was a 7 year old zebra finch and was still laying eggs as of a few months ago. I'll miss you little Millie, and so will your mate, Dutch. Good-bye and good journey.

At what age do you process...

...a dual-purpose bird such as a Rock, Orp or Delaware? I know they don't grow as quickly as the Cornish X's, but I also don't want them to get too old to be good meat. I've looked around for the info but haven't found anything definite. Thanks for any input...

    Just my luck... happy UPDATE

I have a sex-link that's gone broody on me! Isn't that supposed to be bred out of them? On top of that, she's not letting the others near her, so they're laying floor eggs and some are getting broken. I guess I'll keep trying to find a rooster, or just wait it out. I've not been getting near...

Looking for tame rooster in western NC

Yes, I think it's time my flock went co-ed. I'm looking for a fairly tame rooster to add to my 11 chickens. I'd love to have an RIR, Buff Orpington or Barred Rock, but I'm open to other breeds. A banty would be ok, too. Your rooster would have a great home here, so let me know!

New K-9 member of the family (DUW)

Meet Raleigh, a beautiful 3 year-old Doberman my son adopted from our local Humane Society. He's an absolute love, with the best of the Dobie qualities. Which means he's a smart, protective, obediant goofball! He's also beautiful - did we get lucky or what?
