    Muscovy ducklings sexing game!!

My newest Muscovy ducklings, approximately 5 weeks old. Three have very similar feathering progress and are larger. One is definitely behind in feathering overall. My hope is one drake, 3 ducks, but who knows. Any guesses welcome. Also, these babies are atipico (no wild markings) supposed to...

    Egg got too cold?

I lost this little one about 24 hours after it hatched. First, let me say I think I did something wrong from the start. I added this little one’s egg under a mama two days after I put the first ones. I should have collected them all then put them under her all at once, so there’s that. The first...

My broodies adopted 3 week old chicks!

Ok I am bragging just a little (as though I had something to do with it) but my two white cochin broodies have successfully adopted 14 three-week old chicks! They’re now fully integrated into the full flock and doing well. Based on what I’ve read here, it seemed like a crap shoot, but hey why...

    Frostbite Before and After Photos

This winter was my first experience with frostbite in chickens. As a newbie, I was pretty scared, but found great advice and photos here on BYC. Sweet Lou the Roo had (I thought) serious frostbite on his comb and wattles. Here are some comparison photos of the initial damage and how he looks...

New Album Cover: “Sweet Lou the Roo”

Ok I admit it. I have a crush on my rooster, Sweet Lou the Roo. I took this today and when I looked at it I swear I heard the opening bars of “Bad to the Bone”. The three hens behind him even look like groupies!! First non- freezing day in WEEKS, so everyone was out strutting their stuff...

    First Hatchling

New baby in the family! This is the intro day with the rest of the flock. The proud papa is Lou, the cochin roo in front. Hatch mommy is Bettina, and egg momma is one of the Whiting True Greens toward the back. She started with 7 eggs but only one baby hatched. Little Chicken is 10 days old in...

Brush Creek Country Club Ladies Auxiliary

Howdy BYC, I’m Beth. Hubby and I are retired teachers so now we farm and play. We have a beautiful 125-acre farm on the northeast edge of the Ozarks in Missouri. We call it Brush Creek Farms for the seasonal creek that flows through it. My husband, Les, surprised me with a ready made chicken...

    Cochin bantams?

I thought these 5 week old chicks were cochin bantams, but then I read a thread that said all cochins have yellow legs. These two both have dark legs, and one looks like it may be a frizzle. Both are supposed to be pullets. Thank you in advance for any input.

    Ornamental Layers guessing game

Chicks are 5 weeks old in the photos. I got the Ornamental Layer assortment from McMurray hatchery. The description says they’ll all be females from the TopHat and Rarest of the Rare list, so there shouldn’t be EEs. Any ideas about these? Photos 1-3 are same bird; 4-7 are another bird.

    Chick ID Guessing Game

I’m the happy mother hen to 20 fluffbottoms who will be 4 weeks old in a couple of days. I purchased the Ornamental Layer baby chick assortment from Murray McMurray and have been trying to identify several of the breeds. So far I have identified for certain: 1 buff laced Polish 1 gold laced...
