Shredded paper. Any good for bedding?

I have access to loads of shredded paper. Could this be used for bedding in the coop? Anyone see any harm in this? It would be paper only, no plastic from envelopes or anything like that.

    Nap time!

These little guys are so adept at letting you know whats good for temps. I don't think you even need a thermometer. This pic shows that it is just a bit too warm under the lamp. Notice heads out, butts to the light. I have since switched bulbs from a 75 watt to a 60. They seem to prefer that...

Pulp from Juicer. Is it ok?

I juice up apple, cucumber, carrot, lemon, lime, melon and tomato. Would the pulp that the juicer kicks back be ok for my pullets at 6 weeks old? It seems a shame to throw this stuff out if it could be enjoyed by them once in a while.

    Day 19 A Pip!

I just checked the bator after a bit of cheeping and There it was....A Pip at day 19. Could I be early? Or is it normal to have a pip on day 19. This is my first attempt at hatching. This really is nerve racking, but so exciting. After recalculating. I have figured that I did not count the...

Day 18. Just heard a peep!

I am about to add water to the incubator and I thought it would be exciting to see whats going on in the eggs one last time before I close her up for the next 3 days. Would opening and closing the bator to do a candling of 25 eggs be harmful at this point? Update! I decided not to candle...

    Candling Brown or colored eggs.

What should I see if I candle a brown or green egg? Will those colors obscure any veins at day 7? Or should I wait a day or two? This is my first time incubating. Just a bit nervous. By the way, they are Silver Laced Wyandottes and Ameraucanas. [/url]

    Chicken Run Height

How high should the run be? Tall enough to walk in? Do chickens need that height? Is 4 feet high enough? Do you find that you need to get in the run often?

About to set my first batch!

I am pretty excited about hatching my first babies. I have a couple questions though. What if you can't tell what is the right end of the egg to set down? Would guessing wrong be harmful to the chick? Also, should I discount the egg shown with the peck mark as a "no go".? By the way, they are...

    Inbreeding?

When I placed my order, I also got a Barred Rock cockerel along with a few other Barred Rock pullets. Would I be right in saying they could be from the same bloodlines? Would they produce some "wierd" chickens?

    Baby Food.

    Fertile Eggs. Shipped versus Non-shipped

I have heard a lot about how "handling" of fertile eggs can cause a reduced number in the eggs actually hatching. Aside from the egg actually cracking or breaking why would you have a reduced number of hatched chicks? I have heard the following reasons. 1. X-ray machines "killing" the egg. Not...

    Wild turkeys versus chickens.

I regularly have turkey come through my property. Would they avoid my yard once my chickens are there? Or will they pose a threat to them? The momma turkeys always have about 8 or 9 chicks with them at certain times. What about then? I wouldn't like to see what would happen if there was a...

How long do you leave paper towels down?

I read where it says for the first day, to put down paper towels. Do you go longer? Why? Will it be safe enough to take it out after a day? They are all eating well and "stealing" bits of shavings from under the towels anyway. The little buggers grab the paper at the edge and run backwards to...

    The Lucky Seven

Just an update of my seven little survivors. Everyone is happy and eating a ton! They are a bit skittish, but every once in a while one will come to me and peck at my hand. One of my Black Australorps has an eye that is not opening. I have very gently tried to see if it was fused and it does...
