    EE roo? Need confirmation.

I bred him/her. Lavender Orpington rooster over an EE hen. The red just became more prominent. 8 weeks today. But no wattles and I read that cockerels have 3 rows of peas but this is one. Definitely will be bummed. Thanks for the help!

    Dilemma!

Ok so I dropped an egg on day 15 and it cracked badly. I couldn't open it so I taped it and put it back. I left the air cell but didn't think it had a chance. Here we are day 21 and it's alive and internally pipped! I just saw it rocking. But now I worried I taped to high! Should I do a safety...

    Dropped a day 15 egg

I had to come vent/cry here because no one else gets it. I've never done that before, I was putting it back when the lid fell and hit my arm and out it went. I know it won't make it. Saw a little blood and some yolk but I couldn't open it so I wrapped it up and put it back. My husband in the...

    Shipping eggs, tell me everything!

So I'm getting lot of requests to ship my eggs. Right now just within the state of VA. I'm thinking a medium flat rate shipping box and I've seen videos how to package. My question is what does everyone charge to ship? Do you add costs for materials and labor? I currently ask 10/doz for my eggs...

    Staggered hatch in NR360

Has anyone done it?? I loaded my Nurture Right 360 5 days ago but turned out 8 were infertile. I collect eggs daily and had more quality eggs just sitting so I added 8 more in. I tried a staggered hatch just once before and it didn't go that great but the incubator was very unreliable. I figure...

    Help me decide please

Ok so I have two bators going. My NR360 and decided to throw 18 I had in my homemade still air. Put in the same day. Turns out the hen I decided to select eggs from in the NR360 had issues and all 7 eggs are infertile. Plus 2 from another hen. Several in my still air are fertile and developing...

    Genetic color help please

Hi, I can't find any info on this cross and the breed calculator doesn't do it. This hen is a result of my Lavender Orpington Rooster and CA White Leghorn hen. I hatched her myself, she is blue with some speckling. She is being crossed back to dad. Since she will carry blue and lavender what...

    Has anyone done this pairing?

I kept one of the offspring from my Lavender Orpington Rooster and Buff Orp hen. She's a beautiful little thing but of course a mutt. Has anyone ever crossed an offspring back to Lav dad? What do you think I'll get? Pullet just starting laying so I'll find out in my next batch in the incubator...

    Messed this hatch all up

So this was my first time hatching this early in the year and the fluctuating temps were not good for my home-made incubator. I used it all last year with success but I keep it in my basement for the most steady temps but it often dropped to 97 degrees overnight. There is a fan. Anyway I've...

    Take a guess?

Chick #1, Barnyard mix, dad was Plymouth Rock age around 5-6 weeks seems huge. Chick #2, homebred Lavender Orpington/Light Brahma cross. 4 weeks on Saturday. (I know slow to mature).

    Just wanted to share

My daughter showed one of our own hatched pullets at the Virginia State Fair. She got first by default (only Orpington pullet) but my daughter was so excited! The pullet is a cross between a Buff and Lavender, hence the color (non-standard). She also seemed very proud . It was a blast and my...

    Showing a Buff/Lavender Orp cross?

My daughter is showing a pullet I hatched in the VA State Fair on Saturday. Obviously the color isn't recognized by the APA, but besides that she is a very lovely built pullet. It's really just for fun and tickets to the fair. Sure I could have shown one of my pure bred hens but she is...

    Pullet or Roo?

Lavender Orpington/CA white Leghorn cross. 5.5 weeks. I have a pullet she wasn't as pronounced so leaning towards Cockerel but the light pink color throws me off.

    Just for kicks!

Which pullet should my daughter show at the VA State Fair? This will mostly be for fun and free tickets lol but I hatched these babies myself. They are 4 months. I'm learning towards the buff/lav cross since she is full Orpington. The blue is Lav/CA white cross and I guess would fall in the...

    So many early quitters?

Hi, I'm just curious what causes early quitters? My friend and I combined her eggs for a batch 22 of mine, 20 of hers. Overall 7 were infertile. Today is day 10 and 9 have quit and were actually getting smelly. (Different days). I believe 3 had cracks which made sense but not sure on the...

Help me with this hatch please

So I did my first staggered hatch, same incubator. Unfortunately the first hatch took forever to finish so humidity was high a lot longer than I wanted. Thus resulting is smaller air cells on the younger eggs. I threw them in there just to see what would happen because they were too nice to...

    DIS chicks and open abdomens

Hi, just had my 4th hatch and I'm just curious what happens that makes so many dead in shell chicks? I even had one externally pip then die. 21 into lockdown, 15 hatched, one pipped and died in shell, and 5 were fully formed perfect chicks that died. Also several had open abdomens. They weren't...

Just wanted to share : )

Here are two chicks I hatched myself that we kept. Father is my Lavender Orpington. Mother of the blue is my CA White Leghorn and the buff/black is my Buff Orpington. I love their coloring! I'm interested to see as they grow and next spring what I get when crossed back to their dad. :-)
