I’m treating my 5 year old EE hen for suspected egg yolk peritonitis with 250mg Amoxicillin 1x day. Today was her third dose. She did seem much more her normal self today- got off the roost and ate with the others, drank water and electrolyte/probiotic water, and grazed in the yard... But I...

    Scaly Leg Treatment Options?!

One of my gals has scaly leg mites. She’s a RIR, 4 yes old. I have read that I need to wash her feet in warm soapy water and then apply something like Vaseline or some kind of oil for 10 days to smother the mites. VetRx applies topically has also been recommended to me. My question is: Can I use...

    Low shedder- “adult chicken parasites”

This is what I was told today after taking a fecal sample to the vet for evaluation... “Only 2 eggs found in the sample, low shedder, categorized as ‘adult chicken parasites’ told to monitor her for now instead of treat- due to how treatments can cause resistance in the parasites” So basically...

We have 4 hens that just turned 4 years old. 2 are Rhode Island Reds and the other 2 are Easter Eggers. Recently, we noticed that one of the Easter Eggers was having some foamy, yellowish poop. We have seen it several times over the last week or so. She is acting fine, eating and drinking...

    Odd eggs...? defective shell glands?

We have an almost 5 year old Rhode Island Red who has started laying elongated, thin shelled eggs after her last molt. The whites of the eggs are very watery (they cook up fine) and the whole shell membrane (I think that’s what it’s called) comes out when we crack the eggs. (See pics) What...

My Easter Egger laid a different colored egg that usual?!?

This morning I went out to collect any eggs and one of my Easter Eggers “Nosey Rosie” was in the nest box. So I let her be and came back out when I heard her announcing she laid. To my surprise, I opened the nest box to find a lavender egg (one of far right in pic)! She’s always laid green eggs...

    Speckled RIR eggs??

We have 2 RIR that are laying. Not sure if just one or both of them are laying speckled brown eggs. Is this something to be conserned about? I thought their eggs were just the solid terra-cotta color. We have them on high quality layer feed + some free ranging, keep their water fresh, and they...

spots on hen's comb & wattle??

Can anyone tell me what these spots are? There are tiny black specks on her comb and a bit larger spot on her wattle. I've read stuff about pox, favus, mites, etc...Not sure if it's something like that or if it's just peck marks/scratches. Any help or advice would be appreciated:)

    Treats: What's safe & what's not?

Our chicks are 5.5 weeks old. What treats are safe to give them on occasion besides mealworms. I've read where some fruits & veggies or their seeds could be harmful to them. What are the safest bets? Thanks!

    Ameraucana chick...Hen or roo?

We are new to raising chickens & we purchased 2 Rhode Island Reds and 2 Ameraucanas from a local feed store. How can I tell the gender or is it too early? I am specifically curious about the one pictured here. She (hopefully) is so calm and timid, that we have started calling her Sweetie...
