I don't know exactly how, but I had to have. After a great first hatch I just candled my second incubator load; I'm on days 13-16 (staggered hatch, obviously). I found a whole bunch of miscarriages and had to take a lot of eggs out of the bator. Out of 14 Salmon Faverolles, I'm down to 5 good...
I've just discovered these gems, and I can find very little information about them. Can anyone fill me in? I only found one thread on them, with just 10 posts. That seems unusual for this place. LOL
to hatching chickens.
I had Lavender Orps in the bator the day after my first batch hatched, and Ameraucanas, Salmon Faverolles, Cuckoo Marans, and some of my own mix have joined them, since. And I just caught myself cruising eBay and the BYC Auction page. Is there a gum I can chew? A patch I...
Hi, city girl here. I've never been to a poultry show and haven't a clue about where to find one. I've been doing searches online, and the only thing I can find is a list of the really big shows on the APA site. Aren't there smaller shows held more regionally? I found a few references to smaller...
I had one fertile egg out of a small batch of shipped Blue Orpingtons, and I think it's a Splash cockerel. It's not quite a week old, but it's an aggressive eater and quite a bit larger already than all the other chicks hatched at the same time. (mostly BCM) I've got a batch of English-type...
I used the dry incubation method with my first hatch (got 66% hatch on shipped eggs with a 30% relative humidity average), but this latest batch of eggs is rather porous. I got Lavender Orps from that lady with the super expensive rare English Orp colors on eBay, and all the ones I've candled so...
Cuz I just finished my first on Monday and today I started building myself a bator.
Mainly because I ordered too many eggs to fit in my LG. Who hasn't done that, right? I've got to build something before my Cuckoo Marans arrive! I decided to make it out of cardboard boxes, because if there's...
I thought it would be nice to have a thread to compare notes and share pics, especially for us first timers. How's about we post how many eggs we set, whether they were shipped or not, what kind, how many, % hatch..blah, blah, you get the idea.
I've forgotten what I've posted where so I'm...
One of my chicks hatched out with the yolk sac attached to it's navel, and I don't mean partially absorbed, it was hanging on outside and it has a flat little abdomen. The yolk sac was brownish-yellow and it burst when the little guy tried to kick out of the egg. I wrapped the whole thing up...
This one little guy here is from that really good set of Bev Davis BCM's I got. Out of 14 eggs, half are pipped and this one hatched. Out of the other batch of 12 fertile eggs, 4 pipped, 2 hatched so far.
Total, 15 eggs of 32 have pipped, 3 have hatched. They started pipping yesterday...
is something I've been seeing a lot of from my husband since I put my first eggs in the incubator 18 days ago. I burst out of the closet this morning waving a flashlight and babbling about movement in the egg and he gave me a big smile and a soothing, "That's great honey, I'm very happy for...

May you shortly find yourself in a leaky boat without a paddle, and may your mother be unsuccessful in attracting help as she runs barking along the shore.
Amen.
I've been following the dry incubation method and I've just candled some of my eggs at day 17. Some of the air cells seem almost too large, as in all across the entire fat end of the egg. I'm trying not to freak out that maybe I mummified the poor little dears while trying not to drown them.
It's been 6 days and I candled (yeah, yeah, over-anxious, I know) and out of 34 shipped eggs 28 were developing nicely. All five of mine are looking great, too.
One of the sets of shipped eggs was 100% fertile. I marked that source as a favorite seller, her packing was perfect, too.
I was so...
Yes, I know that's not a word.
After much fussing and fretting over temps during the first 3.5 days I took the GD mercury therms out of the GD LG and just went with the digital probe. I'm halfway through day 5 and I just candled one of my lighter brown eggs. I could see the attached air cell...
Okay, I admit it. I thought that the people who had nightmares during a hatch were, well, a little off. And the people who candle obsessively..yeah, totally OCD.
I'm on day 4 and I've had two nightmares and just candled for the first time. (and won't do it again till day 10!!)
What's killing...
And I just won two sets of 12+ Black Copper Marans eggs on ebay. And 4 Blue Orpingtons, cuz they're cool! Okay, that sounded like a teenager, but I'm a 30 year old mother of four. A slightly giddy mother of four. Okay, forget the slightly part. I'm giddy.
Don't give me that look, I did not mistake a young cockerel for a hen. One of my year and a half old Buff Orpington hens mounted my other BO hen this afternoon. Sallie got away just as Pot Pie got on top so the girl on girl action didn't go any further than third base, but it was close there for...
I'm getting 3 Buff Orpingtons, 1 male and 2 female-2 Red Star females-2 Easter Egger females-and a Golden Laced Wyandotte male and female.
My question is this: What is the best way to acclimate the family dog ( a sweet tempered 2 year old Jack Russell) to the new inhabitants of his yard? (and...
