    Two deaths...same breed...no symptoms.

Hey guys, I'm stumped. No new birds previous to the first death, no visitors, no trips to chicken places, nothing. Full biosecurity measures. Enclosed coop, covered run, whole nine yards. Ages varying from 14-18 weeks. Enter the nor'easter. Chicken door to the coop slams shut in the wind...

    Winter Lighting

So...I got some late hatches this year, with ages ranging to date from 10 weeks to 15 weeks. This puts them at starting to lay in October/November. I'm worried with winter fast approaching (it never really starts getting actually cold here until January, but days get shorter before then) that...

    Suspicious of my BR "pullet"

So I was assured that my three gals were in fact gals and that I could take back any roosters, however, is this a little pink for 5-6 weeks on a pullet? She's the largest of the three, but also the most timid/shy. Nice dark wash on the legs, but the comb is turning pink and it worries me a bit.

Trying to pick a feed...and thoughts on fermenting feed

    Odd questions!

Hey all! Two somewhat weird questions about my barred rocks. 1: Will the dark patterns on their beaks carry over into adulthood,or are they like parrots and this is a juvenile only coloration? 2: I've read that they're supposed to have coppery colored eyes, but my gals have grey eyes at 6 weeks...

How to "teach" pullets to roost?

Hey guys! Just brought home my very first three little pullets today, two Barred Rocks and a Buff Orpington. I was able to go into the barn where they had grown up so far, and there was just a large fenced in area inside the barn with bedding and feeders - no roosting bars or anything. I got...

Brand New and looking for advice

Hello Everyone! To say I picked my house in a city that allowed back yard hens would be a totally true statement. While not entirely a city girl, I've never kept hens before. I've worked in exotic pet stores and hand-fed my share of baby parrots, and my mom bred cockatiels for a while so I...
