Hi All, its been a while since I've visited but knew I could come here for answers. Last week I found three dead round worms in one of my hens poo. The last time I saw some worms was probably in the spring but didn't make the connection . She is the only hen with runny, gross droppings...
I have five 2-4 day old chicks and I was wondering when I could let them roam in the back yard for a while, supervised of course. They are in a crate in our greenhouse and I can tell mama hen wants to scratch around. Should I wait a few more days?
thx!
I have my BR in the hen house in a nest box. I closed the opening off this morning with a screen. I think it hatched completely during the night. So how long till I need to give water and food? I couldn't really see if any of the other eggs are hatching yet, but the quick look under her when she...
Hi all, I put 2 eggs under my broody BR on May 31st and 6 more on June 1. She is still in the hen house on a nest and only gotten off the nest very briefly. Tonite I went to check on her eggs and when I pulled one out to listen to it was bloody and yolky. Now I haven't messed with her eggs to...
I have a bunch of kale thats been growing in my greenhouse all winter but is getting ready to bolt. I'd like to freeze it if possible then give the rest to the hens. Anyone know if it can be done successfully?
Thanks!
What do you use? I have been using Frontline plus for years and this season have had more trouble with it not working as well for ticks. I found two enlarged ticks on the dog a few days apart. Looking back at when I last applied Frontline it was 10 days earlier.
Emma was sick last week...
Not sure once again if this is the right place for this question, but this has been bugging me for awhile. I can't remove the silver knife marks on my white ceramic and corelle ware plates. I'm begining to think they are a permanent mark on the plates and will never be removed. I've tried baking...
I have been doing my baking with my pullet eggs and when I first started to use them my thought was that b/c of their size I would use 2 if recipe called for one, etc etc. But I thought no I'll just use one and see how it works. My RSL eggs would be considered med. size eggs, my BR egg is small...
ok, this is a bit embarressing, but I was looking through my cabinets and found a canister of quick oats dated aug 08 and a box of quaker simple harvest apple cinnamon instant oatmeal dated Oct. 08. I remember trying this and didn't like it at all, sort of like eating the equavalent of bark...
I went out to check on the hens and my 19 week Red Star did the squat for me when I went to pet her. Then she shook it off. I was so happy I almost screamed. Then I did it again for fun so I could see her do again.
Come to think of it she was looking in the nest box briefly today.
I've had...
My dog has needed a bath for a long time. My kids have been begging me to wash the dog because she smells so bad. She has terrier of some kind in her because I always find her in a dirt hole in the backyard somewhere.
The reason why I don't bathe her very often is because her coat is almost...
I cooked this for 5 hours on high, I chopped the apples pretty small, added the spices. I used Galas
My question is, is this suppose to be chucky b/c whisking it isn't really doing anything. Did I screw it up? Help!
I gave my chickens black oil sunflower seed this morning. They saw me coming with the bucket and all came running to the fence. Once I threw it in there, they all turned their noses up at it. You'd have thought I put poison in there. Boy did I get the chicken glare. Some even made the "don't eat...
My pullets are roosting on a shelf for now, but they are getting too big for them all to fit. We have to redo our current roost b/c I don't think its high enough. Since we have to tear it apart any way, I was thinking that maybe we could use a 8-10" wide board, seeing as they seem to enjoy the...
My older hens, 4-5 years old, will start to molt end of Sept into Oct with no egg production till March. Other than adding a light to the coop mid to late winter (because I do beleive in giving them a rest period from egg laying) is there any dietary way of kicking the egg production into gear...
I have 9 ten week old chicks and it seems that a few, I have pin pointed the RSL and the GLW, a making a honking noise, like a goose. I have had chicks before and don't recall hearing this type of noise, but then again its been a few years since I've had chicks. Is this normal and/or OK? Is it...
I thought I was hearing things, but I swear I heard a really off pitch, really bad attempt at a rooster crow. I don't have any roosters and haven't had for some time. The first time I heard it my chicks were only a few weeks old and I'm 99% sure they are all hens.
I haven't seen it only heard...
I have a broody Barred Rock hen that I broke of her broodiness about 4 weeks ago. Apparently it's a strong instinct for her and I don't have the energy to break her again.
If anyone has fertile eggs I will let her hatch them here and then you take the hen and the chicks back. I'm not...
Opinions please, I'm beginning to wonder if I received the breeds that I ordered. I'm particually questioning the RIRs. I've been looking every where for pics of chicks but can't find any that satisfy my curiosity. It also may be too early to tell right?
If they aren't RIRs or sex link I would...
They are playing tag with the paper bits they tear off from the bottom of the brooder box. They have a grand ole time chasing each thinking they have something so incredible.
I change the towel 3 times a day just because it gets pretty messy, so its not like its old and torn up any way.
Is...
