    What color are these Silkies?

These just hatched under my broody yesterday - she's white and the papa is buff. They look like they might be partridge to me, but I'm hoping some of our resident Silkie experts will chime in with some help

Silkie chicks - How can you tell what color they'll be?

I just hatched 14 Silkie chicks from B/B/S eggs. I have some that are yellow with a bluish tinge, some silvery blue and a few black. I've been searching and reading, but can't find the info I'm looking for. Is there any way to tell what color a Silkie is going to be from its down color?

    How many can she raise???

I have a Silkie hen that just went broody, and 14 Silkie chicks that just hatched yesterday in the incubator. How many chicks should I give to the hen? How many can she raise? They're being kept in the house in a dog crate until our weather breaks.

When can mama hen take her chicks outside?

What age should the chicks be before I start letting mama take them for "outings?" Our temps are in the 50s here today, and are supposed to be in the 40s this weekend.

To Help or Not To Help?

I have 8 Rouen duck eggs that are on day 25. However, when I turned them last night I found 3 pipped and immediately moved all of them to the hatcher. Humidity is at 69% and temp is at 100. One of them has its little bill up and out of the egg, but hasn't made progress since early this...

    Placement of wafer thermostat?

We're using an old wine fridge with a light bulb as a hatcher. We tried a hot water heater thermostat, but the temp swing was too great, so I ordered a wafer thermostat, which I received today. How close/far away should the new thermo be from the heat source (in this case a light bulb)? Thanks!

    What could it have been?

I was on my way home today and, about a mile from the house, something ran across the road in front of me that resembled either a weasel or an otter. However, I'm pretty sure weasels are smaller (and from what we read they have bushy tails), but my son says the only otters around here (in...

Best hygrometer for use in Brinsea 20 ECO?

I just got my Brinsea today and would really like to use a hygrometer with a probe, since there's absolutely NO room inside the Brinsea for a hygrometer. What is the best one to use? I'd like to order one ASAP. Thanks!

Container of water on top to regulate humidity?

Does anyone use a container of water on top of the incubator to control humidity? I know you have to run a tube through a hole into the incubator, but how do you stop the water flow when you don't need it? Also, does the water go through the tube and then into a dish with a sponge? If anyone...

How do I adjust a hot water heater thermo to prevent temp swings?

We just put together a homemade incubator last night, using an old wine refrigerator. I bought a lower hot water heater thermostat from Lowe's, but we're having problems with temperature swings. It cuts off at 102 and back at at 97. Is there some way to adjust the thermostat to prevent this...

    Could this work?

I have an idea and, whenever I make that statement in my house, my husband and son either say, "Uh oh" simultaneously, or they pretend they don't hear me - so you've been forewarned! Anyway, I've been reading and reading and reading some more about homemade incubators and how they're made...

What's going on with this hen?

I have a Silkie hen that's about 10 months old. Last Friday she decided to go broody, so I waited until Sunday night and put a few extra eggs under her (she was only sitting the one she had laid). She has a little coop and run all to herself, her own food and water, and none of the other...

Need step-by-step instructions or a link to them - PLEASE!

I have a wine cooler that was given to me last year (found it on Freecycle), and I'd really like to turn it into an incubator. Are there any clear and concise instructions anywhere for doing this? Right now I have two LGs and just really don't care for them. My feeling is that the wine cooler...

    How many?

How many duck eggs can a Silkie comfortably brood? I have a broody hen now and want to put some Rouen and Rouen mix eggs under her, and I'm wondering how many I should collect.

WTB NZ or Harlequin Breeding-age Doe - VIRGINIA

I'm looking for one more doe to add to my rabbitry. She MUST be people friendly and of breeding age. Color isn't important as long as she's healthy and able to be handled. Thanks!

He's not pinning THIS one on ME!!

During our last snowstorm, the neighbor down the road came by. He and his wife were walking out to survey the damage and see if the county road had been plowed (ours is a private dirt road). My hubby was out front as they walked by, and then came back in the house to tell me we had four more...

Heads Up! Hidden Dangers in the Compost Bin!

We have a compost bin surrounded by rabbit wire. It had been working great at keeping the chickens out until the snows came, and then the WLH hens figured out how to fly-jump over the fence and showed everyone else. I was out on my deck about 30 minutes ago and noticed one of my WLH hens had...

How are monthly egg swaps done?

I saw a post earlier from someone asking about laws in their state (in this case, KY) regarding selling/transporting eggs over state lines. If you have to be NPIP certified to do that, how are the monthly swaps held on BYC? I'm not trying to start a debate here; I'm honestly looking for...

Adding CPU fan to incubator - question

When adding a CPU fan to a still-air incubator, which direction should the fan blow? Does it blow down on the eggs or upward? I know this may sound like a stupid question, but I'm getting conflicting info and want to make sure before my son adds it to my incubator. Thanks!

    What could she be?

I have a hen that I got as a chick and was told she and her sister were both New Hampshire Reds. Her sister has the typical NHR coloring and lays light brown eggs. However, this hen is darker (more like an RIR) and lays darker brown eggs that have the most beautiful speckles. Is this also an NHR...
