Any strong opinions moving a broody hen to her own coop to hatch eggs? I am worried if I move her she might break her broodiness. The hens all seem to get along normally.
Can I brood the together? They will be hatching this Friday. I was planning on feeding the chicks medicated feed. If I can't brood together that's fine because I have a second brooder but it would be easier to brood together.
Looking for a hatchery. Will be incubating ducks and chickens together but would like to move the chickens out of incubator into a hatchery. Anyone use an easy to clean and inexpensive hatchery? Using Brinsea incubator. I do know that an incubator is also a hatchery but as I stated I am...
My young hen laid her first two eggs this week on Monday and one on Tuesday. But nothing today. This is my first hen to lay. Should I be worried that no egg was laid today? I thought I read something about prolapse??? I just thought once they start laying they pretty much continue for a year...
first winter for my hens and myself. So far so good except for some fox issues. With the blizzard coming into CT tomorrow, 1/26/2015, my gut is telling me to keep the coop closed up during the storm. I free range my hens so the coop is small and just for nighttime sleeping. Maybe keep it...
I have a 100W Solar panel with batteries. I would like to provide a means of heating to just take the bite out of the cold air in winter on days and nights below 30, and would like to heat the water pan. Anyone know of a 30-60 watt heating element or frosted bulb that would do the trick...
4 hens to be delivered in 2 weeks. They will be free rage. Whats the best feed to supplement the free range and is it as easy as tossing the feed on the ground. I want to keep food and water out of the coop during the night if possible.
Will be buying 4 hens for backyard. Need quite layers that are gentle. Research says that the Opringtons fit the bill but are quite broody. How about Rhode Island Reds, Delaware, and Araucana? I live in Southeast CT, where we can get some good cold snaps.
Any thoughts would help.
