Malformed vent on RIR pullet, perhaps internal infection

I have a RIR girl who's probably about 4 months old...I got her and two others from a friend. His have been healthy. I lost one of them two weeks ago to extreme weakness, weight loss, and foul-smelling poop with dirty behind. (No lice or mites.) Now another has similar symptoms, only I...

    FYI about Corid for cocci

This is probably common sense, but I was surprised. I just went to use my bottle of Corid and discovered that there was mildew on the inside of the cap. It's not expired yet. I almost didn't see it but am glad I caught it before giving it to the girls. So, it's possible for it to get moldy.

My chickens ate two lead weights

Long story short, I have 10 hens and two small lead weights are missing, presumably eaten. They are the little round fishing kind, slightly smaller than a pea, that clamp onto the line. I know that they fell into the coop. I have no idea which of the girls ate them. Does anyone have any...

If you have rats, do you throw the eggs away?

We just found out that we have rats and have started a serious control plan. I'm pretty sure they haven't been around too long, because now that they're here, they're a total pain. I've been finding rat droppings in the nest boxes, and assume that the eggs are not fit to eat. There have...

    Healthy Chicks and More Hatchery?

I did a search on Healthy Chicks and More hatchery, but the words are too general to get the BYC search results I need. Has anyone ordered from them and were you happy with your order? Thanks!

MyPetChicken.com...update: customer service still very good

We ordered a total of 5, and now I believe our silkie and polish pullets are both cockerels. The polish started to crow this morning and our silkie has a large comb and wattles, and new iridescent little tail feathers coming out of the fluff. They're about 11 weeks old. I'm still trying to...

Recurrent chicken dreams...do you have them?

Alright, I have serious recurrent chicken dreams. They are usually not pleasant. I'm always being overrun with too many hens, loud chickens, chickens wandering onto neighbors' properties, neighbors discovering that I'm mentally ill and sleeping in the henhouse, me having a flock of strange...

Cost of running 250 watt lamps

EDIT: OK, I just found this link. Might be able to answer this question myself, but thought I'd post this for other people. I'll post my findings later if I get a chance. http://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/cost.html (original question: I'm wondering if anyone knows how to figure out how...

    Hen mating another hen

So....one of our hens higher on the pecking order is "mating" our lowest hen on the pecking order. I just started putting our 6-week-old chicks outside within view of their coop, and noticed this interesting behavior yesterday. We don't have any crowing yet, but this higher-up hen has been...

Difficult moral decision: culling chicks for biosecurity

I never thought I'd be the type to be writing this kind of question, but I've been reading through all the warnings on this site and now I'm wondering about the safety of my grown flock. I have 9 chicks, maybe 3-4 weeks old, in isolation in my husband's indoor shop. I picked them up from an...

    Corid dosing

OK...I just found and online conversion chart and came up with a dose of 4.7cc per gallon instead of the 9.5 (?) that was just recommended in another thread. Am I doing this wrong? THis is for the 5-7 day treatment. It says 16oz per 100 gallons on the bottle, which I made into .16oz per...

Green Bay, WI: Light brahma/Favorelles mix pullet give away

I'm looking to find a home for our funny girl "Rainbow Bird". My broody orpington hatched her from a batch of three fertile eggs on April 9th, so we've watched her grow and she laid her first pullet egg last weekend. I'd love to keep her, but we have close neighbors and unless she's...

Having your ducts cleaned...be careful with your cats...

Wow, we're having the ductwork cleaned and it's flipping noisy. The doors are wide open because of the huge hoses and the cat is nowhere to be found. I was warned by my mother, but we chose to keep her in thinking noisy in the house was less traumatic than a hot garage she had never been in...

The furnace guys sat outside and ate lunch with the girls!

Well, first, we're getting the new furnace we've been needing for years. So hurray for that. Didn't even wait until it broke down in the middle of winter! For lunch, the two guys installing it sat outside and watched our chickens! I'm always a little hesitant what other people will think of...

How big are your orpington eggs?

I have a buff orpington (of not the highest quality stock, for sure) and her eggs are just a touch larger than my friend's silkie eggs. I just read a post not long ago saying orpingtons don't lay small eggs. Is it safe to assume that if I got more orpingtons, the eggs would be larger in...

Once they start being mean to eachother...

My wyandotte has turned into a total boss. She's picking the head of my australorp all the time...enough that feathers are constantly missing. Happens especially when any food is introduced, and when they are trying to settle onto the roost at night. I went out there tonight to turn the...

I'm joining my broody/chicks with the big girls....any suggestions?

Hi, I've got sort of a mess trying to integrate my broody orpington and her three 8-week-olds with our two other hens. They've been seeing eachother all along, because the broody has been moved around the back yard in a pen with her babies...even right close up to the run with the two big...

    Bulk flax seed?

Not that this is really urgent, but I'd like to start adding flax to the girls' diet. It's not totally cheap if I get it at the grocery store. Anyone get it in larger quantities for a good price? I suppose I could google it...just more fun to post here.

    Broody/Hatchtime question...

OK...we are on day 20 with my Buff orp on three eggs. She's in a nest box in the henhouse, with my two other hens outside and separated from mamma hen durring the day. What's the best timing and procedure to use to move the mamma and her babies to a safe brooder box? Part of me wants to leave...

Day 20 for first timer Broody

I don't post much here, but I'm at "that point" where it's just getting too much to stand the waiting. I have a young buff orp who has turned out to be quite broody, so I gave her three fertile eggs from a friend's flock. They all turned out to be fertile, and were live and kicking up until...
