Have 6 day old chicks, some silkies. How soon can I give them treats? I have them on Medicated chick crumbles. Can they eat dried fruit, softened in water? specifically, cherries? Or should I wait until they are in the coop and run with access to grit?
I'm fairly certain this has been covered, but I can't find it.
I've raised many chicks from hatcheries, so have some idea of what I'm doing buut...
Are Silkiess different? Never had bantams before.
Do they need a smaller space? Can I brood them with larger chicks? feed, medicated or not...
I am preparing to order some chicks..They will be mostly in coop and run because of predators. I am getting mostly Polish and other gentle breeds that do well when confined. I would like a roo to warn the girls of danger. What breed of roo is the nicest to his girls, and his keeper? I am...
Heart-shaped yolk. Seeing is believing.... Yeah, yeah, I know, it was the cracked shell in the boiling water that caused the shape, but it could be a message from my hen...couldn't it?
I have chickens, a variety of chickens. I LOVE my chickens. I had ducks before, pekins & rouens. They lived with the chickens, and then when they proved too messy, they lived with the pigs. They were pretty. But I must not of cooked em right, cause they were tough as leather. I am...
My young roo (9 weeks), started out white just like my meatbirds, but he now has a blond head, and red tipped feathers. He is NOT a meatbird, much smaller than they are. What is he? Is he a breed who will be nice to me and my girls? Or should I eat him?
A friend got evicted from his country home, and had to move to town. Town would not let him keep his flock of 17 Red-sex link layers. He gave them to me to add to my flock of mixed breeds. (130 free ranging layers)
When we picked them up yesterday, they STINK...stank...STUNK!!! They have a...
I noticed the other day that one of my 4 year old BSL's has 1 inch spurs. Her comb isn't much larger than the other hens, and she doesn't crow or try to mount the other hens. I have no idea if she lays eggs. I have 142 hens, so keeping track of who's laying is impossible. I have...
We are building a Chicken Coop! She's 71 years old and 98 pounds soaking wet. I am over 50 years old and over twice her size. We are using recycled materials that she selvaged from a 14x64 Mobile home that she disassembled all by herself.
We started from the ground--- up.
It will have...
I had a bit of an adventure this morning in the chicken yard.
I have 2 coops, 1 large hen house full of layers and adolescent layers. 1 small coop, containing adolescent roosters and my brooder.
This morning, I found that my baby leghorn pullets had learned to fly and were escaping the...
Went away for the weekend with 1 very pregnant cat locked in the mudroom with a nice cozy basket and food/water/litterbox.
Came back tonight to a DISASTER! Blood, water, and cold wet newborn kittens EVERYWHERE! I found kittens on top the big Igloo Cooler, in mason jars on my shelves, in...
I sell stuff. Thus, I must make stuff.
This month it is Critters on a stick.
What do you think? Are they worth $15.00 each?
And the Unicorns are still being worked on. They will be a purple floral print with white vinyl horns and white mane w/ long braid. They are adorned...
Oh man! Just when my checkbook says $0, Thiesen's calls to say my order of chicks are in! Grrrrrr. Now I have to send DH to pick up these little fluffballs and starter feed!
20 tiny little leghorn pullets. I just got my 100 brown-egg pullet assortment up to 9 week size and integrated with...
I have been waiting to post my story, but just can't wait anymore. We decided (or rather I decided) to move my small coop! Not a small task, since it started out life many, many years ago as a huge hog feeder. When we moved here, It was set directly on the ground, and the skids were pretty...
I went out, took down a fence so DH could get the loader behind the chicken house to clean out Poo Mountain. When he was done, I put the fence back up. Went in the back door of the Chick House, and picked eggs. AAARRRGGGH! The front door is latched/locked from the outside! No prob, I will...
Since it came from McMurray, I am thinking EE. Hoping Female. Of the 100+ birds I have in this bunch, there are others that I am calling Partridge Rocks with this coloring, but only this one has this fluffy head and upright tail.
3 pics...all the same bird. 7 weeks old tomorrow...
I am so excited! My fridge was SO full! I sold 32 dozen today!!!!! I had advertised fresh Brown Farm eggs on Craig's list. A fellow in another town called and said he wanted 20 dozen. I thought for sure I would get there, and it would be a scam. But he actually bought 25 dozen! Then a...
I ran across this thread... https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=106982 while surfing around BYC. It scared the bejeegers outta me!. Then I saw this article in our "Iowa Farm Bureau Spokesman" News Paper March 2, 2011.
It made me think... Yes, some folks get sick from...
I was stirring the bedding in my grow out pen...nice soft deep litter. 106 5-week old layers in there. Stepped back, and didn't recognise quick enough that it was not a cushion of bedding under my boot, but a bird!
Poor little gal... She tried to run away and hide, but it was too late, she...
