    Lavender Orpingtons x Black = ?

I have some gorgeous Lavender Orp girls and a great LO Roo. I've heard I should cross him with black 'chickens'. Like...?? Australorps or Black-Sex Linked. Which would be best to cross him with? What would this produce? Has anyone done this and what were your results?

    Mourning???

I have several Pekin ducks that have just started laying and one the laid for the first time this morning. When I collected the eggs, no one paid any attention except the newbie. She went into her house and started making this horrible crying noise and nosing around in the straw. I figured...

    Flock Management Ideas...software??

Ok...I know this sounds kind of weird but I would like to see if there is any existing flock management software out there. I have several runs with certain breeds of birds in them and want to start figuring out who is 'paying rent' and who isn't. I was keeping my feed costs in a spreadsheet...

    Breed/Gender Hellp

Received this chick as my "exotic chick" from a hatchery. I believe it's a roo but not sure...any help on the breed? "He" has black legs and usually stands really tall (he ducked down when I took the photo).

Gender help...although it might be too early...

My poults are about 5-6 weeks old and I purchased them from a local food co-op. Sign said that they were Bourbon Reds. They seem to be thriving in their run and eat gamebird feed. Cute little ones who are very curious and friendly. This is my first time around with Turkeys but I'm...

    My Nemesis...Drumstick, the Cuckoo Maran

This big boy is Drumstick. Drumstick was the only hatch from about 20 eggs that I purchased from a hatchery. He is a Cuckoo Maran...and my nemesis. He stands about 2.5 to 3" high and is about 10 pounds. He is huge...and has the attitude to go with it. Daily, we spar and try to...

    Cornish Crosses

I purchased 17 Cornish Crosses as meat birds. All cockerels. They remind me of Jurassiac Park, how they gang up and literally 'hunt' the other chickens. Are these typically this mean? I have 13 "heavy breed" cockerels (also for meat) and they are no where as aggressive as the CCs. I...

5 Week Old Khaki Campbell Babies & Gender Question

I have 3 KC ducklings and they are just about 5-6 weeks old. They have most of their adult feathering almost in and I noticed their heads just have a little bit of down still but most of it is gone. All are the same soft brown coloring on their head and I don't see any dark/green coloring...

    UGH...Make them be quiet!!

So I received two bronze poults and they are about a week old. One of them is LOUD....as in all the time, peeping and carrying on. They have water, feed and heat lamp but still no relief from the peeping. Any ideas???

Ideas for introducing newbies to oldies

I have an established flock of 4 hens and a rooster (two ducks also live with them). They are about a year old. It seems to work and they (the ducks & hens) share the same coop/nesting box and the rooster is super viligant with his 'ladies'. I have 6 pullets that are about 8 weeks old and 7...

    Alfalfa....will they eat it?

I have quite a few chickens and they can clear a patch of grass really quickly. I was wondering if I could give them dry alfalfa as a treat or supplement? I know they go crazy when I change out the straw in their coop and just wondered if adding the alfalfa would be good also?

Is this simply a mistake or a hen?

I ordered a special package from McMurray about a month ago and everyone is really healthy. I have one of the chicks that hasn't developed a comb yet...and wondered...could it be a hen? Everyone else has a pronounced comb but this one... Cornish Crosses I believe.

5 Things I’ve learned from My Rooster

5 Things I’ve learned from My Rooster All record of the year 2012 should be wiped off the charts…or it would if it were me. This year was just …horrible. My sons went off to college…leaving me an empty nester, my husband filed for divorce and I lost my job….all within 6 months. I was...

Very New!!! Can you give me some helpful hints??

Just received my permit from the State of Missouri and can have 50 quail and 50 ringneck pheasants. I have an old greenhouse frame at my house (it is 30'x 50'...yes, that is feet). If I run sheet metal down at the bottom to about 3' tall and then cover the rest of top with netting, would that...

Wanna help me figure this hen out?

Not a great photo...but I know that the rooster is a Cuckoo Maran (or at least that was the type of egg that I bought/hatched). His tail feathers are much more filled out now than in this photo. Really pretty...but mucho pyscho!! The Red hen is a sex linked...or at least that is what they...

    Feeding Baby Ducks

Now I'm confused. I always heard that you need to feed ducklings unmedicated chick starter but the people at TSC told me I should feed them gamebird feed (22%). Which is correct?
