Ok so my son and I have found a way to make this hobby EVEN MORE FUN for him. You will all most likely be aware that a weasel or mink or something killed some of his precious chickens and ducks including the baby chicks he had hatched himself. ( he actually hatched one himself with a toothpick...
So in the incubator I have 11 of cynthias awesome blue/black ameraucanas and 6 of the blue orps cooking away nicely at day 9. In the hatcher I have 12 of my own mutt eggs from our flock...one has pipped this morning and is chirping up a storm in there although all I can see is the little crack...
Hi all just thought I would post a quick note about the eggs I recieved from Cynthia in the mail. The packaging was amazing, not a single egg cracked. Each egg was individually wrapped after having the breed and name of the hen pencilled on it.
They all arrived in 2 days and i set them after...
hey guys...im going to build something in the 8x10 range this weekend to provide the birds with another 80sf of floor space and HEAPS of roost space for the winter...had thought about adding onto the existing coop but i think this is a better idea...if anyone has any suggestions after the many...
we collected 7 eggs from the girls ( RIR, red sex link and barred rock eggs) which have been fertilised (hopefully) by the RIR or the ameraucana roo...we will see if they hatch or even develop. They have only been laying for about 2-3 weeks so this may be way to early but what the hell nothing...
Hi guys..well we have been getting a good 3-4 eggs/day from the girls for the last 3-4weeks i guess..I have some eggs from cynthia coming in the mail and thought I would store up some of our own eggs and hatch some mutts at the same time as cynthias...how do i go about doing that? I ahve 3 eggs...
The "prison" coops have been breached...something got in last night i can only assume through the holes in the chainlink fences and killed all our babies except for 1 buff laced polish male and one cuckoo silkie ( these were the babies we hatched ourselves) and then got into the main alcatraz...
ok am wondering what chicks I will get from various combinations of the following birds:
Roo # 1 is a RIR. He is seen here with a RIW. If i understand correctly this produces gold sex links where the chicks are buff/red for girls and white for roos?
Ok how about rooster #1 with this...

Morning all...Im sure you have all seen my alcatraz for chickens...well i need to expand the coop to make room for everyone as it gets colder. The coop now is 10x6. I want to expand it probably at least another 8x4 and it has to end up looking nicer than it does now...which should not be...
I just noticed today that one or two of the chickens have lightish brown liquid stool which has only been the case the last couple of days according to my son. We have been giving them alot of fruit ( watermelon, bananas, tomatoes, cucumber, grapes etc lately...I wonder if this has done it or is...
Ok i know birds have to mate and I guess I thought that the very brief jump aboard , squawk a little then jump off was the whole deal....I WAS WRONG!
My wife and son and I sat there in stunned silence after witnessing our rooster pecking a hen to get her to fall off the roost, then grab the hen...
Hi guys...i posted the pics in my other post which i will put the link here for. I got three chickens for free from a lady who was leaving town. She told me they were ameraucanas. I have checked out the websites with the standards for ameraucanas and it seems as if the hens have most of the...
ok here are some pics:
1st is the fuzzinator our RIR roo:

Here are some of the babies we hatched:
How absolutley righteous! I went out to check the nesting boxes this morning and say hello to the birds and lo and behold a little brown egg in one of the nesting boxes...no idea who laid it ...i think maybe one of the red sex links but really i have no idea for sure. Is there someway of...
