    Odd Question

My nest boxes are about 3' off the floor. What happens to the hatched chicks who want to leave the nest? I'm afraid a fall from the box will kill them, but that’s where my broody hen wants to be. Any remedies?

How Long Will Chickens Stay Hidden After Dog Attack?

A couple of dogs killed 2 chickens last week. Found the body of one and a pile of feathers from the second. Three showed up later, but the rooster and 4 hens were still missing, with no forensic evidence that they had been hurt. One of the 3 that showed up was looking for the flock, and...

Has anyone tried this product, or know anything about it? I saw it mentioned in Mother Earth News. It looks interesting, but it's expensive.

    What's Up With Ruby?

Ruby is broody, sitting in the nest box. No problem there, really. She looks perfectly normal sitting in the nest, with her beautiful partridge feather pattern, but, her tummy is bald ... like plucked clean! There appear to be a couple of feathers left, but that's all. So, what's going on ...

    Hawks

I just started free ranging my girls over Memorial Day weekend, and so far so good. I have a senior flock of hens and a junior flock of pullets, each with their own "residence" ... naturally, the "kids" want to stay out until dark while the "grown ups" go in their hen house about 7:30pm...

Hen can't walk; what to do?

My cuckoo marans, Bernice, was doing well when, suddenly, I noticed that she laid an egg on the hen house floor beneath the nest box, something she never does. Then, I found her lying down, unable to walk. I've put her in a box in the garage with food and water. At first I thought she might be...

    Strange but true ...

My silly cat helps me herd the chickens. Honest. He doesn't bother them, just moves them back toward the coop.

    What's Wrong with Aretha?

My black Australorp, Aretha, has always been the top chicken; active, noisy, curious, and a regular loud mouth. But, when I got home from work today, she's just the opposite; very quiet, sitting in the run while the others run around her, at and one point she looked like she was going to fall...

    Buckwheat

I was just reading that buckwheat is a good winter cover crop for your garden. How is it for feeding to chickens? If it's good for them, I thought I could kill 2 bir ... um, get double duty out of planting it.

    Chicken & Egg Math

I just posted this on another thread, but wanted to open it up to more members and get their feedback. I just figured out that I spend $75 per month on organic feed ... alone. No grit, no oystershell, no meal worms. When all 7 girls start producing, I can figure on about 5 or 6 eggs per day...

    What to do About Olivia?

My little splash BLRW bantam, Olivia, laid her first egg about 7 - 10 days ago, and she's already broody. Twice now, I've removed her and her egg from the nest, but she quickly returns and lays another egg; sometimes laying twice in one day. I don't want to stop her, because I know it's a...

What Color Eggs Are Your EEs Laying?

I have 2 EEs and the first one laid yesterday. It was a beautiful mint green egg! The second one is squatting, so I'm expecting another colored egg very soon. I'm hoping this one will be blue or, at least bluish. What color eggs are you getting?

    Runny Poo

I noticed one of my chickens had very runny poo. I was trying to catch her at the time, so she may have been stressed, or she may have a problem. How should I treat this? Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
