Scratching my head . . . Roo or Pullet?

Need input from someone experienced with roo's. My broody hatched out 7 chicks, 3 of which were definite roo's. They had large red combs, wattles, and were enjoying "Roo Play" - the raising of hackles while staring down and challenging each other. Oh, yeah, they were crowing, too. I found good...

Need recommendation for mosquito outdoor sprays/foggers that won't hurt chickens.

The mosquito's are horrible this year due to an unusually wet spring and summer. The chickens don't seem to be bothered by them but they're tearing my family up. We can't go out to work with the chickens or work our garden without covering ourselves head-to-toe. We need to treat our grass and...

Chicks under broody hatching several days early. Wondering why.

My buff orp went broody so picked up local fertile eggs and put under her. Day 21 would be this Wednesday/Thursday. First chick was here, dried off, and hopping around Sunday afternoon! Woke up Monday morning to two more adorable peepers. I went back and re-counted my days. Twice! No mistake...

Need Advice RE: Wacky Hormonal-Driven Bull-Headed Broody Hen!

My Buff Orp - Blondie - is broody. She's 2 years old and sat on fertile eggs last spring. She did a great job and was a fantastic mother. Last year we moved her into a chicken tractor by herself when she became broody and she brooded away from the rest of the flock without any problem. She's...

    Recommendation / Request

BYC was a great help to us when we built both of our coops. The "COOPS" section was invaluable and there was one day when my husband was puzzled about how to finish a portion of the coop. He came in, told me to pull up pictures of "nesting boxes" on BYC, and he studied them before he completed...

Hen with leg injury and "open mouth" breathing

I have a 15 mo. old hen - "Shirley" - that injured her leg in February. I asked about that incident in this thread> https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/853967/leg-injury-how-to-handle She recovered from the injury and has been back with the flock doing fine since then. Last week I thought I saw...

Normal for hen to molt after hatching chicks? Feathers everywhere!

I have a buff orpington hen that's about 14 months old. Two weeks ago she hatched out a chick. She was a great broody and is a wonderful mom. Just went out to the coop and it looks like a feather pillow has exploded in there! As the mom and chick are separated from the rest of the flock, I...

Think my hen might be on her way "out" - UPDATE** CAPILLARIA WORMS

Lucy is a 2 1/2 yr. old red sex link. She's my lead hen and has consistently laid an egg almost daily for the past two years. She will miss 1 or 2 days a month. She has always looked like the devil with straggly worn-out feathers - she has never had a proper molt - but is the first out the door...

Leg Injury - How to handle?

Good Morning - Last night, as I was locking up the girls, one of them got spooked and went bonkers, flying about, crashing and banging into everything and everyone. When the dust settled I noticed one of my 9 month old barred rocks limping. She was apparently a victim of all the crashing and...

Frigid Cold + Snow Cover = Increase in Predator Attacks

I'm sure this isn't news to those of you in northern states who are used to long period of frigid cold with snow cover but it's something that I - in Virginia - am experiencing for the first time. We've had really cold-for-us weather the past three weeks and snow cover for about two weeks...

Looking for Game Cam recommendations -

We're interested in getting a game cam for our coop and back yard. Anyone have any recommendations of what features we should be looking for, what type/brand is best, where would be the best spot to purchase one? Game Cam would be used for back yard and coop area. We're in a wooded region and...

Vet found spirochetes in droppings but med's don't seem to be working -

My 27 wk. old Easter Egger had been very healthy and active until 3 weeks ago. She was the first to lay and was a consistent layer. 3 weeks ago she laid a thin-shelled egg and we've had nothing from her since. She seemed a bit withdrawn and was suddenly at the bottom of the pecking order. As I...

    Hen "social issues" impact laying?

I have a mixed flock of 3 established hens plus 5 pullets that have just come into lay. The 8 girls have been living together for about two months. Of the pullets, the Easter Egger was the first of the chicks to lay at 19 weeks of age. That was 6 weeks ago and she has laid consistently since...

Pine shavings in run attracting flies? Anyone else had that experience?

I've never had a fly problem either in the coop or run and I've never had an odor problem, either. The girls are fed fermented feed which seems to help that. I still don't have an odor problem but I have begun to notice flies in the run only. Nothing about my housekeeping has changed. I have...

    We've got SQUATTING!!

I've had three hens for the past year but I bought them at laying age so this is my first experience with new layers. Got my five chicks when they were a day old and they're now 18 weeks. They're a mixed flock but I'm seeing the following from them - Barred Rock Girls: Combs and wattles are...

Shed lining? I think so but would appreciate other opinions. Poo Pic Inside. Oh, joy!

Lost a chick a few weeks ago to what I think was cocci but aren't sure. They were 14-15 wks. old at that time, I saw no signs of blood in poo, just one girl started laying in run, lethargic and fluffed up. She collapsed about 8 hrs. later and we had to put her down 24 hrs. after that. I started...

Hens ate medicated chick feed. Need to withhold eggs?

DH refilled feeders this morning and accidentally gave the laying hens the medicated chick feed. I managed to catch the mistake about 3 hours after it was done but the hens had been gobbling it down. Do I need to withhold their eggs due to the medication in the feed? If so, for how long? Thanks!

Lethargic late yesterday, dying this morning. What moves this fast and how to protect the others?

Can Cocci kill this fast? Less than 24 hrs. since any symptom was noted? She's still alive but not for long. I noticed her being lethargic and puffed up late yesterday afternoon. Began Corid in water due to our last few weeks of hot, humid, rainy weather which makes prime breed ground for cocci...

Need dosage for liquid Corid. Think one of the chicks may have Cocci -

I've searched here for the correct dosage and I'm seeing two different things. Several say 1 teaspoon per gallon. Others say 2 teaspoons per gallon. I don't want to under-medicate and I don't want to poison, either. Chicks are 14 weeks old and have been doing fine. They are on medicated feed...

Buff Orpington? Buff Rock? I'm thinking I have one of each -

Can't believe I just noticed it this morning. My chicks are 10 weeks old and are in a paddock right next to my three "Big Girls". I thought I had two Buff Orpington's in the mix. I purchased them at a feed store so I know there's room for error. I've been struggling to tell the difference...
