Two nice young Narragansett tom turkeys. Hatched July 2010, broody-raised free range on pasture. I kept them as "hens" and got a visit from the Sex-Change Fairy just after Thanksgiving. Too many toms!
No shipping, local pickup only. Western Pennsylvania (southern Butler County)
I have two bourbon red hens (and an inordinate number of toms, but that's another saga.)
One of them managed to raise two poults this summer. She kept them away from the rest of the turkeys for months -- keeping mostly to the safely electrified goat pasture and run-in shed, clever girl. She...
Not sure where the right place to post this question might be, but since the occasion was my neighbor's Jack Russell terrorist, I'll try here.
I have the photos and some of the bodies.
What would you consider fair market value for:
1) An easter-egger pullet about three weeks from laying age...
McMurray Hatchery is telling a friend of mine that electronet fencing won't work for turkeys.
They say that the turkeys just stand there and get shocked.
I have never heard this before, but I've also not tried my electronet on the turkeys. It worked great for last year's meaties.
I was...
The last of my buff orps to go broody this year is having ... complications.
First, I've had to cull most of the eggs, and two broke on their own. One of those fouled the nest, and I suspect it was this that spoiled the other eggs. She was down to five (I started her on 14) yesterday, and...
Posted this over in behavior and egglaying to be greeted by crickets chirping.
Anyone know?

I kept three Freedom Ranger hens from last year's meat flock. (An experiment I will not repeat.) One died with a grossly enlarged heart this spring, I sent one to the...
I kept three Freedom Ranger hens from last year's meat flock. (An experiment I will not repeat.) One died with a grossly enlarged heart this spring, I sent one to the processor with my Cornish this week, and one -- the famous Dale "Supersize" McNugget -- died suddenly last week.
On necropsy...
Got ten refugees in yesterday. Mostly white with some brown schmutz markings on a few feathers on most of them. NO idea what they are -- not leghorns, not Cornish cross. I thought maybe golden comet cockerels, but six of them appear to be pullets. (I hope!)
Photos and the whole story here...
No nibbles on this question over on meatbirds, so trying here.
I'll be butchering five toms -- 3 bourbon reds and two Narragansetts -- for Easter, and am trying to get a sense of the dressed weight to expect.
They range from 17-25 pounds live.
Anyone got a formula, chart, etc. on the...
I've searched BYC and employed teh googles, but still can't find any info on what dressed weights to expect for my heritage turkeys.
Their live weights vary from 17-25 pounds. All toms. I'm keeping the hens and two toms.
Anyone who knows a rule of thumb, I'd really appreciate it.
I kept back three hens from my JM Freedom Ranger meat birds this year, and have been running them with my regular laying flock.
Yesterday I found one dead in the coop; she was 9 1/2 months old. At first I thought she'd had an egg-laying problem, but it turned out the other hens had just been...
I have at least two Narragansett and two Bourbon Red tom turkeys for sale. Buy one, buy 'em all. Bid is for ONE bird.
They were hatched June 15, bought from Stromberg hatchery.
They are very tame and enjoy strutting and showing off for people. Excellent barnyard pets, and very beautiful...
I have 6-7 cockerels for sale.
1) Silver Spangled Hamburg x Delaware. Has adorable Dalmatian-type spots on his breast and his Dad's comb. Very handsome boy. $5
2) Silver Spangled Hamburg x (I think) Silver-Laced Wyandotte. I have three similar-looking, very racy and ornamental. $5 each
3)...
Today I saw one of my bourbon red hens crouch down for an extended and inept copulation (attempt?) by one of the BR toms.
They were hatched June 15, so just five months old.
So what gives? Is she going to lay eggs out of season? Or was this just recreational turkey sex?
The little #@#%$'s were up in the village on Sunday, crapping on people's weber grills, breaking stuff on porches, and generally acting like the gang of miscreants that they are.
Okay, background. We live on 26 acres, set far back at the end of a lane, and it is at least 200 yards up a hill...
I posted a brief description and a couple photos of my new coop waterer on my blog:
http://cynography.blogspot.com/2009/11/flows-downhill.html
It is working very well, and has really cut my chore time down even more than I anticipated.
Henery had a leg fracture this Spring. We set it and he recovered fairly well, but still limps at times, and is unable to roost. (Apparent damage to the tendons and ligaments that lock a bird on to the roost.) He also lost some of his rooster mojo. He's gotten it back with the hens, but...
Looking for a stud for my two Saanen x Nubian doelings, who will be ready to breed in late October or November. I'm in Southwest Pennsylvania.
Show records not important, good health, good structure, and good production genetics are.
Breed not very important. I'd actually prefer some color...
I have one Narry poult who fell ill and required a long period of isolation and nursing. I'm pretty sure she ate something she shouldn't have; no evidence of anything contagious. She's fine now.
She's now fallen behind the others in growth, and I'm loathe to put her back with the flock for...
Yesterday morning, Professor Chaos let the poults (1 month old) outside first thing in the morning, "because they asked so nice." Then he thoughtfully closed the barn door so they couldn't get back in.
Gaaaarrr!
One Narragansett poult was looking kind of droopy last night, had one eye closed...
