Why is everyone in an uproar???

My 5 yr old welcome had to be put down today due to a broken leg that wouldn’t heal. She spent two weeks in a cage near her mates to the end. I was surprised that everyone hung around her. I didn’t think she was the leader because the rooster hated her. Anyway I added two 6 mos olds in a run...

    Hen's leg injured?

My hen injured her leg. Initially she was limping. I isolated her in a cage with the flock. I'm trying to give her aspirin for pain, I've examined her foot and don't find any bumps, swelling, etc. A week later she is still eating and drink but seems to be not getting better. I splinted her leg...

Why have my hens abruptly stopped laying?

It's June here in CAlifornia and perfect weather for laying. I was getting eggs daily and then all of a sudden everyone stopped laying. It's been about 5 days. Everyone looks healthy, no molting. They are in a protected cooped and run so predators can't access them. They get organic crumble...

    my hen's symptoms

My chicken has something wrong. She is my biggest chicken and has always stayed on the edge of the flock. Over the past week or so she has stopped laying (she lays the smallest egg of the flock). She appears pigeon toed and is walking/waddling slowly. She's sitting alone alot up against things...

    Shouldn't they be laying?

I have a mixed flock of 6 hens under 4 years old. They all stopped laying in November. All my neighbor's flocks are laying again but mine aren't. They are done moulting. I live in No California. Any ideas why everyone else in the neighborhood is getting eggs and I'm not????

    Rooster aggressive towards one hen

my banty rooster tries to isolate one of my younger hens away from flock (she was added with four other pullets last year). He chases her but doesn't try to mate with her. He hasn't hurt her but doesn't want her as part of the flock (eg. he won't let her into run to eat with others). Is this...

Hen can't jump into nesting box

I have an older hen, 5-6 yrs who still lays eggs. she looks healthy but no longer jumps up to roosts. She has slept in nesting boxes which are lower to the ground. Now she's sleeping on coop floor. I built a little ladder to a nesting box so she now climbs it to sleep in box. She doesn't look...

meat crumble for hens and chicks?

I'm integrating my 10 week old chicks with my layer hens and could not find all flock/grower crumble anywhere. The feed store said I could feed meat bird crumble (22%protein) to all with oyster shells on the side for layer hens. This seems like alot of protein for chicks. Are they correct (now...

treated for coccidiosis, chick still passing blood

I am on the final day of treating my four 7 week old chicks for coccidiosis(one was pooping blood). All appear healthy and happy but I saw blood tinged poop today. I am pretty sure I know which chick is still pooping the blood. While active and eating/drinking with the rest, she is always the...

    What other than coccidiosis?

I bought 4 chicks from a local breeder two weeks ago. They are now 6 weeks old and I noticed what looked like pinkish blood in a stool when I was cleaning there cage a few days ago. The were not, and are not, on medicated feed. They have been raised in a brooder inside since their arrival. I...

    sour crop or more??

my 6 year old americana has/had sour crop. I assisted her to vomit per reader's suggestion 3 times over three day. On the last attempt she brought up some solid material rather than just foul fluid. Her crop is no longer balloon like and I can't feel anything hard. She no longer vomits when I...

    Broody or freaked?

I added (gradually) two hens to my flock and all was fine for a month. Last week one of my older gals had a bloodied comb. One of the newer Americana's has been aggressive towards her all of a sudden. For awhile she hid under a bush and was the last to enter the coop. They appear to being...

    serama dancing

I just received a banta serama who does this little dance that looks like a bullfighter--one wing touches the ground like a cape and he slides sideways around the hen. Is this common to all rooster or this breed? It's really quite enchanting.

    What is this toreador dance?

I just received a bantam rooster--serama and lavendar combo who does this funny little toreador dance in an attempt to woo the ladies. He puts one wing spread along the ground and dances sideways towards them. what is this and is it common in all roosters or just one of these breeds?

    hydrocortisone cream on chicken's back?

My rooster (a handsome young man) is overmating with my chickens. He is on vacation-perhaps permanently- at a neighbors. Several of his favorites have lost all feathers on their backs. One looks particularly red--like sunburn-but has no open sores. Can I use hydrocortisone cream topically to...

    Do chickens destroy eachother's eggs?

For the last two days I have found a broken egg in the laying box. One had only the yolk with no shell. Today the shell was smashed but the egg was still inside. These broken eggs are from two different hens. Animals do not have access to the coop or hen house so I'm baffled. Any ideas?
