I got a used 1590 GQF Hova-Bator and I set some eggs after the first batch didn't hatch I blamed the eggs so I got some fresh eggs and put a second batch on. When I went to candle them again nothing after a week. I put a temp minder in the incubator and saw it was at 116 F ! When I turned it...
We got 50 Barred Rocks from the hatchery last July and we've overwintered them in the barn but they don't use the roosts but rather just sleep on the floor like Broilers? Any tips to get them to use the roosts would be appreciated .
I keep a flock of about 60-80 birds in a small barn and overwinter them. One of the issues I have is the build up of manure through the course of the winter. In the past I have had to clean the barn in the middle of January not such an easy task when it's -20 and snow everywhere. So been looking...

Vancouver looks to leading the way in Canada for the legal use of chickens in city limits.
A little later this year but winter has officially arrived here with our first of many snowfalls. Last night 7 homeraised birds had to be removed from our Manitoba maple trees to be put inside the barn for winter. It dipped to -8 C at night. The main flock still had access to the outdoor run but...
Do any of you track your egg production? Since we keep a flock of 80-100 birds we have undertaken writing each day how many eggs are collected. It is put down on a spreadsheet along with sales etc. The results are pretty interesting as even with different sized flocks a yearly pattern is pretty...
In the spirit of Halloween I thought it would be cool to post some cool pics. It was a nice moonlit night and the red glow from the hen house had a spooky look to it.
Well we didn't order any chicks from the hatchery this year and it was looking as though the flock would drop slightly in numbers but mother nature took over and some of my hens decided they were going to raise little ones.
This specked sussex hen went broody and had 16 chicks, for sure some...
I see at your site listed the common predators of poultry but don't see 3 particular predators not listed. The Fisher has 3 small cousins that are equally devasting when they get into a chicken coop.

Just read an article in Small Farm Magazine regarding the use of pressure treated wood in feeders. It said that raw milk in 2 BC dairy farms had evated levels of dioxins which were traced back to pressure treated feed bunkers.

Here is a couple pictures of the brooder I built for small chicks. It's a small 4X6 building with two large doors in the front for easy care of the chicks. A beam down the middle inside is where the lamps hang down and vents in both sides allow air to flow through the building for ventilation. I...
