Do I have to have an NPIP flock to show my birds? If not, are health papers or some equivalent needed? How old is too old for a show bird? I have a couple of 2 and 3 year olds that are gorgeous. Are they too old to show? How young is too young? My hens didn't start laying until late this...

Questions: Hatching in Egg Cartons / Best Thermostat?

Okay.. on my last hatch we went through three thermostats. Might have been me being paranoid but now I don't trust any of them. Any suggestions on the best ones out there? Also can I get one that does both temp and humidity together?? I recently read on one of the boards that someone was having...

Day 2- Take Out / Leave In

It is day 2 and 11 of my 17 eggs have hatched. Should I take out the first bunch of chicks and move them to the brooder or just wait and see if the other 6 hatch today? At what point do I give up if there are still a few eggs left unhatched? Thanks!

Question on Breeds that are laying now

If I want my chickens to lay eggs this time of year would it be better to find hatching eggs from chickens that I know are laying now? Meaning... if I have a breed I am interested in and I contact two flocks of SQ breeders (same breed)... would the one with hens laying now be more likely to...

    Black Australorp Breeders

I have been searching for a couple of weeks for a source of quality Black Aussie hatching eggs. The American Australorp Breeders association seems non-existent, at least on the web. Is my only choice to buy hatchery birds?

German bloodlines of New Hampshire Chickens

I posted to the breed Yahoo group but haven't gotten much feedback and you guys are always so great at answering questions. Candling BCM Eggs

Today iss day 7 in the incubator so I decided to candle my eggs to see what progress was being made. 8 of my 9 Light Sussex clearly have veining. One looks clear but I thought I would give it a few more days since I am fairly new at this. My question is with the BCM... I candled them when I...

Another newbie question... IDing birds for breeding

We have always used color bands on the mature birds to tell what group they are from, but now I want to be able to identify specific birds based on pedigrees. If I wait until they are older to put leg bands on there could be some confusion. I saw wing tags in a catalog. Do they work well? I know...

Confused by SOP's... Newbie needs help!

We have been raising chickens for years. But this past year I decided that I wanted to sustainably breed all of our replacements instead of buying them from big hatcheries. Well, if I am going to do something, I want to do it right. I know from other livestock that it is much easier to start...

    Black Australorps

We've had these birds for the past three years and have been fairly happy with them. They are a calm bird for the most part and seem to lay well in the heat of the summer. As a matter of fact we purchased them because they handle the heat so well. I've been trying to find pure breeding lines...

    High Egg Production Light Sussex

I was very interested in breeding Light Sussex but the information out there is a bit confusing. I know the breed dropped way down in numbers years ago and are on the rise again. Most resources say that they lay anywhere from 220-260 eggs a year. That would be tremendous, but I am not sure it is...

Welsummers, Columbian Wyndottes, and Blk Copper Marans

We purchase about 150 day old layers from the popular hatchery magazines each year and have always had great success. However there are three breeds that I would like to raise on the farm (Welsummers, Columbian Wyndottes, and Blk Copper Marans). I am guessing that most hatcheries are breeding...
