Our first call duck incubation adventure (hatch-a-long)

Edit: Listening for an internal pip is another great way to check, yes. Hold the eggs right up to your ear and tap on the shell gently with your finger. Some may not make any sound, but tapping or chirping = internal pip.

    Safety Hole? Concerns

I love the first 24 hours after a hatch, they’re perfectly happy to just hang out with you. I’m happy you’re getting him a friend! I raised a lone duckling once, she was like yours, the only one to hatch from a small batch.. it was a great experience, but I don’t know if I could do it again!!:th

9 week old Rouens. All hens?

I’m only hearing drake sounds in this video! I agree with the bill comment, too. Pick them up individually / separate them one by one from the group. They’ll make a whole lotta noise then :p

    Buff ducks lifespan?

@Miss Lydia I can’t say for Buffs specifically, but many ducks can live to be 10+ years old with proper care. My eldest right now is 6 years :) By the way, male ducks cannot safely live with chickens (in case you planned on getting them!) Females are okay, though.

Khaki Campbell gender identification please help

Yep, I agree both boys. I see one has a small curl at the end, too. Sometimes it’s only a half curl like that and doesn’t go all the way around.

Our first call duck incubation adventure (hatch-a-long)

Sounds familiar ;) Though, mine weren’t calls. My no egg tooth babies were still able to internally pip (the membrane is very thin). @MrsWinterWheat Not quite sure why the babies are behind. What has the temp read through most of incubation? How do the air cells look from the side? They tend to...

Oh, sweet baby Highlander ❤️ So sorry I couldn’t be there to help but it looks like you and him did such a good job!!! He looks amazing :weeYes, how’s he doing?

    Are these ducklings abandoned?

Sounds like it.. if they’re domestic and no mother is watching over them, I don’t see why you shouldn’t take them to a rehabilitator. I mean, really ALL of the domestic ducks should be captured and rehomed. Also, if the new ducks are about the same size as the Pekins and look just like...

    Safety Hole? Concerns

You could likely leave it to him. I only ever pulled it when it was time to hatch and dried out.

    Safety Hole? Concerns

Looks like the veins have reduced, no? Still not quite ready, though. You will know when he’s ready, I promise.. When it comes time for him to hatch, I’m guessing you’ll have to finish the hatch for him. If so, don’t rush it!! Zipping is meant to be slow, and it’s healthy for baby to spend...

    Safety Hole? Concerns

Oh, yeah, that 15 hour one I posted was doing the head pushing, too. Not quite sure what it is, maybe a stretch? But it wasn’t a problem for him. I love that big yawn!!! :love

    Safety Hole? Concerns

Here’s some photos of two I assisted. At the time of this, baby still had some minor veins, still chewing, the works.. she hatched 2.5 hours later. This guy I assisted quite early, as he was behind the rest. Still huge veining, still chewing, of course. He hatched 15 hours later. I suspect...

    Safety Hole? Concerns

I understand being nervous.. But this really seems okay to me. Baby is going to put in a whole lot of effort into hatching and needs to rest and to absorb all the way. My average time from pip to hatch was 42 hours, but I had ducklings take as long as 55 hours and be just fine 🤷‍♀️

    Lockdown tommorow

@Miss Lydia I was just typing up a message 😂 Yes, I’m wishing your duckies luck! Let us know if you have any questions or need any help!

    Safety Hole? Concerns

I’d leave him for now. Still looks / sounds good!

    Safety Hole? Concerns

I agree with this! If you do, I’d chip off a bit closer to where baby’s bill is. Don’t forget to moisten the membrane. Usually babies pip again to get more air, but I’m guessing baby has enough air as is and is just hanging out until they’re done absorbing 😂

    Please, show me your ducks

It seems to be at least fairly accurate.. I have noticed minor inconsistencies for sure, though Thank you so much!! You’re too kind ❤️ You have me very interested looking through old photos, and wow, how could I forget.. I had other ducks with the white wing tips! All the white wing-tipped...

    Muscovy duck questions

Interestingly, it’s actually the other way around! The drakes would be black, and the hens would be chocolate!

    Safety Hole? Concerns

That baby is still chewing and not ready to hatch, but I agree, 36 hours is quite awhile for no more progress. If you’d like to do a small partial assist just so baby can have more air, you may.. Realistically, this baby should hatch later tonight.
