    Do I have a rooster?

    Agree. He's stunning!

I think I killed my favorite chicken

You did what you thought was right at the time. That's the best that any of us can expect to do. And what you've learned from this unfortunate experience will help you to continue being the best chicken parent you can be to your other birds. I am sorry for your loss.

Looking for pics of juvenile (6 wks +/-) Rhode Island Reds

I'd guess that C is a cockerel, possibly D as well. The other 2 are hard to tell.

Looking for pics of juvenile (6 wks +/-) Rhode Island Reds

This is Killian the RIR at about 7 or 8 weeks. She had me a little nervous around this time, but she is now a lovely laying hen at just over a year old.

    Mix Bielefelder and Barnevelder

I didn't realize we had a hatchery here in the US that sold them. In fact, when I saw it on the feed store's list, I thought it was a typo, haha. I did have to drive about an hour away to get them. They have never been avaialble at any of my nerby feed stores. I got 4 of them. One turned out to...

    Mix Bielefelder and Barnevelder

My experience is limited, but so far this is turning out to be true in my case.

How do you thin the herd?

I like to be able to tell my hens apart, lol. Since you’re not looking to breed, I’d probably keep my favorite pullet from each breed or color.

    Mix Bielefelder and Barnevelder

That’s really cool. I bet you have some of the nicest Barnies around being so close to their origin. Mine are just from hatcheries here in the US and most don’t have great double lacing like I see pics of. The 4 chicks I just got are blue Barnevelders, so Im especially curious how they will look:

    Mix Bielefelder and Barnevelder

Wow! Their color is really pretty. I like that it looks like some of the lacing came through. My chicks range in age from 5 weeks down to 2 weeks. My first two hatched 4/20- one male (MJ) and one female (Pimento). The female has the dark chipmunk stripe on body and head. Neither chick had a...

    Mix Bielefelder and Barnevelder

Hi there! I’d love to hear how your chicks are turning out? I hatched chicks from my Bielefelder hens (mix breed but not barred Roos). Unfortunately I couldn't determine gender until combs popped and barred color appeared around 4 weeks old.

Easter Egger… do we have a Roo?!

I’m thinking cockerel based off the last pic. EE’s can be tough.

    Gender guess 4 week Barnevelder

Misty is refusing to come out of the brooder for pics. This is the best I could do. Misty is the chick whose comb is turning pinkish-orange. Her chest color I think indicates female, but then again my obvious male has a loudly patterned chest, too. Just for fun here is Cloudy the male. I...

    Gender guess 4 week Barnevelder

Every time I try to get a pic, there’s either too much or not enough light, lol! I just moved them out to the big run, and the brooder or little chick area is under the roofed portion, so now my pics are going to be dark and probably too backlit for goood comparison. But here’s a couple more...

    Not viable??

I agree with you. THey look like they began to develop and then quit pretty early on. That being said, I have a rule of 2 (or 3). I have to candle and consider an egg a goner twice before I actually toss it. But that's mostly my anxiety talking.

    Gender guess 4 week Barnevelder

Guys! Please tell me this is my imagination! Of my four 4-week old blue Barnie “sexed pullets”, 1 is a boy. I’m okay with that. But what about the others?? Tell me I’m just being paranoid! Cloudy is 100% male. No doubt. In spite of the breast pattern. I get it. It happens. Hatcheries promise...
