We stapled woven agricultural fabric to close up the ends. A bit of insulation, but breathable, breaks the drafts, and stops rain. Birds are dry and hoping for the best. Thank you for your idea and for taking the time to help.
Hi all, we have 60 freedom rangers in 2 mobile A frame coops. They are on fenced pasture during day and we shut them in mobile coops at night. They are 6.5 weeks old, fully feathered. Coops are open but covered on top with tarp. Ends are open. We are in northern MA and it’s going to be 45-55...
That’s fantastic! We have cold hearty breeds; barred rocks, New Hampshire’s, Sussex, Jersey giants. And one very large freedom ranger. I honestly don’t even see evidence of frostbite on combs. We got down to -40 with windchill. In the barn it was -10. Glad to know all chooks are safe.
Thank you. We are aware and concerned about coop fire too. We have the lamps clamped high above roost and have chains run through attached to coop frame so they can’t fall. All electric is off floor, clean, good condition and relatively new. This is a first for us and we only intend to keep heat...
We have a flock of 13, coop is built into a stall in a modern barn. Not airtight but not drafty enough to ruffle feathers. It is -6 now and feels like -30. It will get down to -9 (maybe feeling like -35?). This is a historic low for massachusetts. Our birds haven’t experienced anything close to...
Hi friends! We have a broody hen we’d like to get some fertilized eggs for. We ultimately want 2 or 3 new pullets for the flock, how many fertilized eggs should we purchase to get this number? Thank you!!
I think the jaw ligaments stretched just enough for the lower beak to move out of the way and the top beak to go down. When I pulled it out there was no bending of the beak, just some laxity in the jaw (barely enough). One in a million freak occurace. This happened back in February and she has...

If your infestation is as bad as that I would defer to the folks above. They have experience in more traditional treatments and I trust their advice.
Yes, DE is definitely NOT harmless, if it was, it would be of little use for dessicating pests. If applied directly on vents/under wings while wearing a good fitting mask, chances of it getting in lungs are substantially reduced. But it is a great choice for those seeking organic alternatives...
Yep, she’s been laying textbook perfect eggs since I posted this. Guess she just needed my blood pressure to rise. But through this I am learning about fermented feed and I am so thankful!!! You guys are the best. ❤️
Hi! I have an unpopular opinion that I am sure I will get grief from. But… my phone experience with DE treatment for northern fowl mites was 100%
Hi! I have an unpopular opinion, so I am sure I will get some grief here. We successfully treated a northern fowl mite infestation in our flock over...
The very next day she laid a perfect egg. And yesterday she laid a perfect egg. SMH. Chickens are giving me gray hair. 😂 thank you everyone for your help.
I just saw this bird vomit. Ugh. Does that symptom go along with anything that would cause shell probs? We are lucky in that we know exactly which bird it is, she’s the only one who lays blue eggs. Lucky in that I suppose. All other shells are perfect for now :( I am definitely going to do the...
