    Emergency, chicken having trouble breathing!

I’m so sorry! Let me go back and read more about your set up. Do they all have access to calcium(oyster shells)?

First time hatching with a broody momma.

We just had out first broody raised chicks! We had 2 and potentially 2 more. It’s been fascinating to watch. We kept Debbie separate for about a week before opening her separate hutch within the coop/run. She has seamlessly integrated her chicks with the flock and roo. As I said earlier it’s...

Review by 'Jasfarm' in article 'Broody Management - From the First Turkey Strut to Weaning the Chicks'

I currently have a broody! She’s on Day 17 and this article has been so helpful. I have a Roo and I’ve been worried he might hurt the chicks, but reading this gives me hope that all will be well :) Thank you!!

    Distended abdomen. Trouble diagnosing.

I’m so sorry for you loss. I had a girl pass from reproductive (pretty sure EYP). She lived for almost 5 years, but it was brutal seeing her go downhill. She passed in my arms and I swore never again. It’s so hard making that call, but they know we love them so much. She was a beautiful chicky poo’

Can overmating feather loss spur a molt?

Thank you so much! I’m glad that it’s not as bad as I thought. I think it’s also tough as we’re in New England and they have zero coverage so they are confined in their run (hawks are also out in full force). I always try to give them at least an hour or so if we’re outside and our dog who...

Can overmating feather loss spur a molt?

Thank you! I didn’t think so, but wanted to check and some have new growth. The shaft must have been removed.

Can overmating feather loss spur a molt?

The first photo is Stella. She has not had a saddle, and she keeps clear of penguin (unless it’s their nighttime cuddles). Second is Smokey. She was wearing a saddle and is clearly in much better shape. Third is Kelly and she is the one where I’m like holy heck how did this happen. She was...

Can overmating feather loss spur a molt?

Hello! I have 10 hens and 1 roo, and as it’s spring, penguin is doing what all good roos do and going through Rooberty. Penguin and 5 hens were all raised together. They will be 1 year, April 1. Then I have one Buff Orp who is ~4 or 5 years old and four Lav Orps who will be 2 in May. The 5...

Hen with spurs - Looks like she ripped it off??

And how long should I keep her separate? Or once the bleeding stops, give her back to her flock? She is finally part of the roosters squad and I don’t want her to be reset in the pecking order. They took a loooong time to finally bond and submit.

Hen with spurs - Looks like she ripped it off??

****UPDATE**** Spur fell off while in recovery. She is now wrapped up and back with her sisters! Hello - I have a hen - Janice - who I noticed was bleeding this am. The pictures aren’t the best but her spur looks like it was caught on something and tore. I’ve cleaned with warm water and...

Do I cut off permanent frostbite

So lucky! I wish my roo liked me. I guess it’s fine - he takes his job very serious and has a nice respect for me, but they are so cute!
