    Chick born with deformed leg

Hey all! I’m a relatively experienced backyard chicken keeper and I’ve hatched several batches of chicks, but a new issue has cropped up that I don’t know how to deal with. I hatched a few silkie chicks about 2-3 days ago, and one of the chicks seemed to be having trouble standing even a few...

    Easter Egger roo?

Yes, his name is Posey, which probably needs to be changed now. 😂 I’ll need to find him a new home. I already have two other roosters with 11 hens. Such a bummer because he IS gorgeous!

    Easter Egger roo?

Hi all! I’m looking for confirmation on my Easter egger ‘pullet’ that I think is probably a roo. S/he has a much larger comb than my other easter eggers, but in every other way seems like the others. S/he is fairly timid, although energetic, and hasn’t crowed. Age is right around 15 weeks old...

    Cuckoo Maran Hen?

We’re 95% sure Luna is a roo! The tail feathers are coming in as that classic sickle shape. Still no crowing or signs of other roo-like behavior, though! Of course, my friend commented that if she was a new rooster in with my giant buff Orpington roo (he’s ruled the roost for two years), she’d...

    Ingrown feather on rooster?

My 3 year old Orpington roo has a reddish-white bump on his rear, near where his tail feathers start. I noticed he seemed to have a gap in his feathers, and when I checked I found this bump. It’s nearly an inch long and is slightly flexible...not as stiff as a feather, but it doesn’t really...

    Cuckoo Maran Hen?

They only free-range a few times a week (I keep them about a mile from my house...ran afoul of zoning ordinances), although much more so in the summer than in winter. They’re sort of spoiled birds and don’t care for snow. 😂 But they do have a good-sized coop and run. Plus, my Buff Roo is two...

    Cuckoo Maran Hen?

Well, nuts. He’s my sister’s favorite! I already have a rooster (buff Orpington) and a total of 12 hens. From what I’ve read, that’s not really enough for two roosters. :(

    Cuckoo Maran Hen?

Here’s a few more pictures, with my other cuckoo maran for comparison. The first one just Stella (the for sure hen) and the second is side-by-side.

    Cuckoo Maran Hen?

She (hopefully!) is around 7 weeks old right now. I really don’t know what to make of it! I agree that the comb is alarming, although it’s not too red yet, but her legs are fairly delicate and I always thought that was a good indicator of a rooster. I may just have to wait and see! 🤷🏼‍♀️

    Cuckoo Maran Hen?

Hi all! I added a couple cuckoo maran hens from tractor supply this year. I’ve been noticing lately, though, that one has a larger comb and much more white than the other. She was by far the smaller of the two up until about a week ago, but I can’t help but be nervous that I may have gotten an...

    Easter Egger Gender

Hi all! We bought some Easter Egger pullets from Tractor Supply a little more than four weeks ago, but now we’re not sure about this one. She (maybe) is a bit bolder than the rest and her comb seems to bit a touch larger and more red than the others. I’ve heard it’s hard to tell with Easter...

    Orpingtons and mixes sexing

Hi all! I have a batch of 8 week old Orpingtons (some full, some mixed with RIRs and one mixed with a Black Star) and I’m trying to figure out who’s a hen and who’s a roo. I’m fairly certain numbers 3 and 8 are hens, but the rest I’m not sure. My RIR hens have very large combs, so it makes sense...

NW PA- RIR and Buff Orpington Roosters Free to good home

Hi everyone! I have three sweet 11 week old roosters free to a good home. They were all hatched by me with eggs from my flock. One is full Buff Orpington (his parents came from Meyer Hatchery) and the other are Rhode Island Red/Orpington mixes. All three are very good tempered from productive...

    Rhode Island Red/Orpington

Hi all! I’m looking for some helping sexing my 8 week old RIR/Orpington mixes. They were hatched from fertilized eggs from my older birds, and I know the full Orpington in this batch is a rooster (already crowing!) and the black sex link mix is a hen. The RIRs are confusing though. The one with...

    4 week old Buff Orpingtons

Hi all! So, I know it’s a bit early for sexing BOs, but I’m dying to know if I have all ladies or not. I hatched 7 BO eggs in the classroom and kept 3. Technically I’m not supposed to have roosters, but I’ve definitely bonded with these cuties. They’re the friendliest chickens I’ve ever met! One...
