I followed advice given to me BUT….

Wow ! I had no idea. I’m so glad I am getting the advice from all of you. Big Jim is maybe 20 inches tall. Plus he has these things like 3 inch long claws at his ankles. The hens of the same species don’t have them. I guess those are “spurs “ ? I have been going in the chicken yard wearing...

I followed advice given to me BUT….

I have not handled any of the chickens when they were young. When they were old enough, they were put outside. I have given names to them but I don’t spend time making them friends. Out of 9 hens, one seems to want my attention. I wanted a rooster to protect the hens I realized after reading...

I followed advice given to me BUT….

It is funny how Big Jim is. When he sees me coming up to their area, he and the hens run to me. He will get about 5 feet from me and stares. I will carefully toss the mealworms at his feet, but he just makes this soft sound and lets the hens eat it. He takes a while before he starts eating and...

I followed advice given to me BUT….

Thank you for the reply. None of my chickens look like the ones in the molting article. They just have feathers everywhere and some hens have a feather or two sticking out odd like it’s ready to fall off any time, but no skin showing.

I followed advice given to me BUT….

Thank you for your reply. I notice your names. I have Thyme, Sage, Ginger, Olive Oil, Salty, Paprika, Basil, Hot Stuff, Parsley, Rosemary and of course Big Jim.

I followed advice given to me BUT….

So I put my ladies and gentleman into the run for a week. They all were quite accepting of this to my surprise. I watched them, looking for an egg eater. I searched for any evidence that may prove that there is a bad chicken egg eater. I did come to the conclusion that there is no egg eater but...

Is it me or is having chickens complicated?

You are so very kind. In answer to your question, all of them stay together and act upset when one of them begins to cackle at me for opening the nesting box when she’s laying there. They seem very attached to each other.

Is it me or is having chickens complicated?

I’m growing mealworms and give the chickens about 40 total between the flock. I also give them some oats, lettuce, and some bread I bake. I don’t give them much and only maybe 3 times a week.

Is it me or is having chickens complicated?

Wow, an eagle? That is so intimidating. Right now the chickens have about a quarter of an acre to roam around. We have 12 chickens which includes a rooster.

Is it me or is having chickens complicated?

My husband David found her body under the coop. We are pretty confident that predators are not able to get into the chicken area. I have to remember to take pictures but hopefully it won’t happen again. Thank you for the reassurance about chicken ownership

What's happening to all the eggs ?

Thank you 🙏 I will try that this week!

Is it me or is having chickens complicated?

It’s almost 1 am and my head hurts after reading so many fascinating and educational posts from other chicken lovers. I’m trying to learn as much as I can but the more I learn, I get overwhelmed and begin to think that I have no business being a chicken “Mom”. I am fond of my ladies and Mr. Roo...
