Thank you for the advice. I'm leaning towards it being genetic. In the photo, the single white feather stands out the most, but initially, I noticed a light streak of white across the wing tips. At first, I almost thought the chick had rubbed against wet paint or something. Then I noticed...
I found this board a while back and posted a few times. However, due to life being non-stop hectic, I haven't had time to post at all this Summer. I have a question, maybe someone can help answer. This Spring I ordered eggs and hatched chicks from two different Barnevelder breeders. I have one...
I love the name! I am new to Barnevelders, but in other straight-combed breeds, my roos have had much more developed combs at this age. I think NPH might be a girl. I like the dark color though. I hope you post photos when he or she is full grown. It's so neat to see photos of this breed...
The incukit worked very well, but I do wonder how it will hold up over time. The high humidity can't be good for the electronics. I wish they would make the kit so the circuit board is separate and can stay outside the incubator. I am not looking forward to cleaning it! I should consider...
15 eggs went into lockdown yesterday morning (start of day 18). Humidity reading a steady 65-70%.
I came home this evening to see 8 chicks have pipped! My face is near glued to the incubator window!
Good thing you don't have auto spellcheck... I might think it necessary to consult a shaman when choosing breeding stock! Kidding aside, I appreciate the good advice. I went to the Heirloom Expo in Santa Rosa, CA last year and a man named Jim Adkins gave a few talks on heritage poultry. He...
I'm so sorry. I haven't personally had to put down a chick, but I know the day may come.
The breeder where I bought my day old chicks said it is best to break the neck. It sounds harsher than using CO2, but he said it is the fastest, most humane way. The only problem for me is knowing how...
Thanks for your replies!
I ended up buying an incukit instead of wiring my own thermostat (easier and less expensive!). I set up my cooler and have it running in the closet space. I have been opening and closing the door so often (to turn eggs) I don't think air flow should be a problem...
I just thought I'd post my experience with the Incukit DC with proportional Thermostat from Incubator Warehouse. Before I bought it, I had a hard time finding reviews, so I wanted to share in case there were others wondering about it.
This is my first time hatching and I went with a DIY...
Pickledchicken,
I didn't realize you were Mountain Ridge Poultry! (I'm new to the board). I was the one who commented on your homemade incubator on your facebook page. Nice to see you here too! An update on the Incukit DC... after a couple hours to install it into my cooler and make some...
Great looking incubator! You've put a lot of thought into your design. Are you still happy with your Ranco thermostat? I am building an incubator and am leaning towards the Ranco.
No, not a walk in. It's a hall linen closet. There would be about 6-10" of free space on each side of the incubator, and I've taken out the shelves, so there is free space above the incubator (which would sit on the floor). I wonder if I take the door off the hinges and leave it open, if that...
