Maybe I missed it, but did you say that you saw the fox attack? I'd be curious to know what time of the day this was. I do have fox near me.

I do exactly the same and I would definitely use poop boards as far as shavings, I buy bales of wood chips/shavings at either farm & Fleet or a local feed store. I used a piece of vinyl flooring left over from the floor of the coop to line the poop board with.
